Former Yankees and present Dodgers’ pitcher Lou Trivino suddenly finds himself at the center of baseball’s hottest controversy this week involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.

Trivino’s second hit-by-pitch on Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. in less than a week has sparked tensions between Los Angeles and San Diego. The incident occurred in the same inning that Randy Vasquez plunked Shohei Ohtani, escalating drama between NL West rivals.

The timing creates an uncomfortable spotlight for a pitcher fighting to rebuild his career after Tommy John surgery.

Trivino addressed the situation candidly during his Wednesday appearance on MLB Network Radio’s Loud Outs. The Dodgers’ veteran right-hander acknowledged the unfortunate pattern involving the Padres superstar.

“I haven’t hit anybody in four years, and I hit Tatis twice in a week,” the ex-Yankees reliever said Wednesday on MLB Network Radio’s Loud Outs. “I feel bad.”

The 32-year-old’s honest assessment reflects his frustration with the circumstances. Trivino missed the entire 2023 season recovering from elbow surgery and only recently returned to major league action.

His command and velocity remain works in progress following the lengthy rehabilitation. The repeated incidents with Padres’ Tatis created unwanted scrutiny during his comeback attempt.

Dodgers management and Trivino both denied any intentional targeting. However, hitting the same star player twice in rapid succession raises inevitable questions about control and circumstances.

The Yankees acquired Trivino in the 2022 trade that brought Frankie Montas from Oakland. While Montas struggled significantly, Trivino emerged as a reliable bullpen option for New York.

He posted an impressive 1.66 ERA across 25 appearances during the final months of that season. The right-hander was expected to fill a crucial high-leverage role in 2023 before elbow problems ended his season prematurely.

Surgery became necessary after conservative treatment failed to resolve the issue. The Yankees declined to retain him following his missed campaign, allowing him to explore other opportunities.

San Francisco initially signed him to a minor league deal this offseason. Injuries prevented him from taking the mound before the Giants released him.

The Dodgers claimed him on another minor league contract. Bullpen injuries within their organization created an opening for Trivino’s major league return this month.

“I definitely took baseball for granted before,” Trivino said. “So I definitely realize how blessed I am to have this career now. I go to the ballpark with intention and gratitude.”

Escalating Dodgers-Padres rivalry adds to volatility

The incidents involving Trivino haven’t resulted in ejections or immediate retaliation between the clubs. Yet they contribute to mounting tension in an already heated divisional rivalry.

Ohtani’s hit-by-pitch earlier in the same game intensified speculation about intentional targeting. The two-way superstar represents the Dodgers’ marquee offseason acquisition and baseball’s biggest international star.

Neither organization has publicly escalated the situation through official complaints or inflammatory statements. Players from both the Dodgers and the Padres have largely avoided adding fuel to the controversy.

Major League Baseball continues monitoring the situation closely. League officials remain prepared to intervene if tensions boil over into on-field incidents.

Trivino focuses on maintaining his health while maximizing this unexpected second chance. His primary concern involves proving he can contribute effectively rather than generating headlines.

The reliever’s career has taken numerous unexpected turns since his productive Yankees stint. His 2022 performance suggested he could become a dependable late-inning option for any contending team.

Instead, surgery and rehabilitation consumed nearly two full seasons of his prime years. Multiple organizations passed on him before the Dodgers provided an opportunity.

Trivino’s current situation exemplifies the challenges facing pitchers returning from major arm surgery. Command issues and velocity fluctuations often persist well beyond the initial recovery period.

His recent incidents with Tatis highlight these ongoing adjustments. What appears intentional to outside observers may simply reflect a pitcher still finding his rhythm after an extended absence.

Looking beyond current controversy

Trivino’s immediate focus involves establishing consistency with his new organization. The Dodgers need reliable bullpen depth as they pursue another division title and potential championship.

His previous success with the Yankees demonstrates his capability when healthy and sharp. The challenge involves recapturing that form while avoiding further controversial incidents.

The veteran understands that his window for proving himself may be limited. Age and injury history work against him as younger options emerge throughout the organization.

Yet his gratitude for this opportunity suggests a player motivated to make the most of his circumstances. Baseball careers often include unexpected second acts for those willing to persevere.

Lou Trivino’s transition from reliable Yankees setup man to controversial Dodgers reliever illustrates baseball’s unpredictable nature. His unintentional role in escalating NL West tensions overshadows his comeback story.

The former Bronx bullpen contributor must now navigate heightened scrutiny while rebuilding his career. Success in Los Angeles could vindicate his perseverance through injury and setbacks.
