Despite being the second-highest payroll team in MLB for 2023, the Yankees are entering the offseason early this year, and their final home game at Yankee Stadium didn’t reflect the fanfare one might expect, despite what the attendance numbers suggest.
The 46,537-capacity home of the Yankees look empty as they hosted the Arizona team. However, it appears that the Yankees calculate their attendance figures based on ticket sales rather than the actual number of people present at the game. This resulted in a highly exaggerated announced attendance of 41,096, even though the real crowd in the stands likely didn’t surpass 4,000 individuals.
The Yankees’ miscalculation
Severe weather in New York led to the rescheduling of the Yankees’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks from Saturday to Monday. Originally anticipated to draw a large crowd due to Aaron Judge bobblehead night, the game on Monday saw a sparse turnout of Yankees fans who made the trek to the Bronx for the afternoon matchup.
While barely a few hundred attended the game, the franchise put an impossible figure of 41,096.
On a positive note, the fans who did attend the game witnessed an exciting comeback victory and had the chance to collect numerous foul balls. Despite the sparse turnout, those in attendance found humor in the announced attendance figure because, frankly, it didn’t align with the visible crowd.
