Domingo German, former New York Yankees pitcher, has made his return to baseball by signing a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates!
According to Jon Heyman of The Post, the one-year deal is worth $1.25 million and includes a potential club option for the 2025 season, valued at $2.25 million.
The contract also features performance bonuses, providing Domingo German with an opportunity to increase his earnings. This new opportunity serves as a fresh start for the 31-year-old right-hander following the conclusion of his tenure with the Yankees.
Domingo German, a 31-year-old right-handed pitcher, has been given a new opportunity with the Pittsburgh Pirates after signing a minor league contract. Originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009, German became a member of the Yankees organization in 2014 as part of the trade that brought Nathan Eovaldi to New York.
Domingo German’s time with the Yankees was characterized by both on-field brilliance and off-field controversy. He earned respect for his pitching abilities, most notably throwing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics in 2023 with an efficient 99 pitches and leading the team with 18 wins in the 2019 season.
However, Domingo German’s career was also tarnished by significant off-field incidents in 2020. First, he faced an 81-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy following an alleged altercation with his then-girlfriend. Later that same year, Domingo German was placed on the restricted list due to accusations of alcohol abuse within the Yankees clubhouse, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal.
Domingo German looks to rebound after disgrace
After being released by the New York Yankees in November 2023, Domingo German now has an opportunity to revitalize his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to a January report by Mark Sanchez of The Post, he successfully completed a court-mandated inpatient treatment program. However, he didn’t stop there and took the initiative to seek additional professional help to reinforce his progress and personal growth.
Before becoming a free agent, Domingo German spent the 2023 season posting a 4.56 ERA and striking out 114 batters over the course of 19 starts and 108 innings pitched. His best moment came with a perfect game in Oakland.
Throughout his tenure with the Yankees, his overall record reflects a 4.41 ERA and a total of 543 strikeouts accumulated across 522 1/3 innings on the mound.
