How did Gary Sanchez perform?

In his inaugural game starting for the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, Sanchez produced a 1-for-4 performance, featuring an infield single and a strikeout, contributing to a 9-4 win against the Miami Marlins.

Just a day after his waiver claim from the Mets, Sanchez took the field, donning the No. 99 jersey. Earlier this season, he had stints in the minor leagues with the Giants, following his departure from the Minnesota Twins and a quiet off-season.

“At certain junctures in the season, you aim to progressively enhance your team,” shared Padres manager Bob Melvin. “Despite his recent transfers, Sanchez has a track record of delivering solid performances.”

However, as Yankees’ supporters recall, those days are somewhat in the past.

The two-time All-Star was set aside by the Mets last Thursday after participating in three games, with a 1-for-6 performance, three strikeouts, an RBI, and less than stable presence behind the plate.

“It’s indeed been challenging, but my past experiences are behind me,” Sanchez communicated via a translator. “My gaze is fixed on the future here in San Diego. I’m fully committed to the present.”

Given the Padres’ recent struggles to generate offense from the catcher’s position, the hope is that Sanchez can inject some energy. Austin Nola, batting .131 with three extra-base hits and a dismal .434 OPS in 39 games, hasn’t lived up to expectations. Brett Sullivan, Nola’s occasional platoon partner, has also struggled with a .170 batting average, four extra-base hits, and a .482 OPS in 21 games since his minor-league call-up on April 16.

Luis Campusano has been on the injured list since April 17, with an anticipated return around the All-Star break after undergoing surgery on his left thumb.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of a team brimming with superstars,” expressed Sanchez. “This team is packed with potential, and I’m eager to contribute.”

This season, the Padres are the third team in the National League to have Sanchez on their roster. After being released by the Giants on May 2, Sanchez joined the Mets on a minor league contract a week later, filling a gap left by their injured catchers.

After showing promise in Triple-A Syracuse, Sanchez was promoted to the Mets’ major league team on May 19. When the Mets reinstated Tomas Nido from the injured list last week, Sanchez found himself without a spot.

Sanchez enjoyed his prime years with the Yankees, earning runner-up in the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year race and making the AL All-Star team in 2017 and 2019. He shone with 20 home runs and a 1.032 OPS in 53 games in 2016, 33 home runs and 90 RBIs with an .876 OPS in 2017, and 34 home runs, 77 RBIs and an .841 OPS in 2019.

However, his offensive prowess eventually waned, and defensive issues became more pronounced. Traded to Minnesota before the 2022 season, Sanchez managed a .205 average with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 128 games. The Padres, with a league-low .220 team batting average as of Tuesday, hope Sanchez can improve their offense.

“At this moment, we need a bit of an offensive boost,” Brenly added. “Our team’s batting performance has taken a hit recently. Hopefully, Sanchez can help rectify that.””
