Reflecting on the transition, Alex Verdugo expressed surprise at the warm reception, acknowledging the support from the fans, which has been uplifting.

“Most of the time, I go out there, get to my position, say what’s up to left field,” he said, via Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. “I didn’t know what the response would be here. But the fans have been there (for me). Every time I turned around, man, they’re barking, yelling my name. They’re showing me love. Really, it’s felt good.”

Acquired from the Red Sox in December, as part of a trade deal involving Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert, and Nicholas Judice, the 27-year-old outfielder has made his mark with the Yankees, currently boasting a .225 batting average with a home run in 35 at-bats this season.

The Yankees‘ trajectory in the 2024 MLB season presents a stark contrast to the uncertainties that loomed over the team in the early days, particularly following the disappointing 2023 season that culminated in the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs. However, the current season has witnessed an ideal start for the Yankees, with an impressive 8-2 record, achieved even without their ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.

Anticipation surrounded the Yankees’ potential improvement this season, fueled by organizational history and bolstered by acquisitions such as Juan Soto and Marcus Stroman. This optimism has translated into tangible success on the field, as evidenced by the team’s strong performance, winning each of their first three series of the season.

The team’s early success has not gone unnoticed, with MLB.com elevating the Yankees from the 7th to the 3rd spot in their rankings after just 10 games. Surpassing even the defending World Series champions, the Texas Rangers, the Yankees now hold the top spot in the American League.

Despite initial doubts stemming from Cole’s injury, the Yankees have defied expectations and showcased resilience, impressing analysts like Will Leitch. Giancarlo Stanton’s standout performance, leading the team in home runs, further underscores the team’s strength. With the season still in its infancy, questions remain unanswered, but the Yankees’ promising start lays a solid foundation for future success, leaving fans eager for what lies ahead.
