It was necessary for someone to step down.
Estevan Florial, a rookie in center field, went back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the Yankees beat the Mets 4-2 at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday to win the Subway Series.
When the team starts a four-game series in Oakland on Thursday, Giancarlo Stanton is likely to be added to the active roster in place of Florial.
Stanton will be taken off the injured list after he shows the team that the pain in his left Achilles tendon should be gone.
Since July 24, Stanton has been injured. He played two rehab games with Double-A Somerset over the weekend, going 0-for-7, then faced Yankees righty Luis Severino in batting practice before Tuesday’s game.
Boone said he thought Stanton’s Tuesday workouts went as planned.
As a defensive replacement in the ninth inning, Florial caught Francisco Lindor’s fly ball hit by Wandy Peralta. This was the last play in Tuesday’s win.
Florial had one hit in nine at-bats (.111) in the three games he played during his latest call-up.
