The New York Yankees are gearing up for a substantial shake-up following a tumultuous 2023 season, according to sources cited by Bob Klapisch of NJ.com. While the team previously relieved hitting coach Dillon Lawson of his duties during the All-Star break, an even more significant departure is on the horizon.

As the season draws to a close, speculation has intensified about which individual might bear the brunt of the team’s underperformance. Klapisch’s sources within the suggest that a major figure will need to be held accountable for the season’s setbacks.

Countdown to change: New York Yankees set timer for big decision

However, the finger is not expected to point at the most prominent figure in the Yankees‘ hierarchy, General Manager Brian Cashman. Insider reports indicate that Cashman’s position appears secure despite the team’s struggles.

In the midst of this backdrop, the spotlight shifts to Manager Aaron Boone, who could potentially be facing an uncertain future. Klapisch highlights the likelihood of Boone facing a job loss, despite recent signals of improved performance. The manager’s confidence has shown signs of resurgence, yet Klapisch deems it “highly unlikely” that his role is guaranteed for the upcoming season. There’s a possibility that Boone may already have received indications that his tenure is in jeopardy.

General Manager Cashman was questioned about Boone’s job security during a recent press conference, held earlier in the week. Notably, Cashman refrained from offering an unequivocal vote of confidence for his manager. He instead alluded to an upcoming evaluation process that would encompass everyone within the organization, including himself. These assessments will be undertaken by the team’s managing partner, Hal Steinbrenner.

Although Boone’s position is the most obvious point of contention, it’s essential to note that the majority of responsibility for the Yankees’ struggles falls on Cashman. The General Manager’s decision-making, including the construction of a flawed roster and notable strategic missteps—such as the failure to secure a left fielder—has come under scrutiny.

Looking beyond Boone, the team is also contemplating changes across several departments, including scouting, player development, and analytics. These areas have faced shortcomings that have contributed to the team’s lackluster performance this season.
