Yankees’ starting pitcher Domingo German had a disastrous outing, surrendering a staggering 10 runs in just 3 1/3 innings. This performance marked the highest run total he has ever allowed in a single start throughout his six-year career. Additionally, Domingo German set a new personal record by conceding 10 hits, and he equaled his worst performance by giving up four home runs.
During the middle of the game at Yankee Stadium, the live broadcast on the YES Network captured a glimpse of the Yankees’ dugout, showing disheartened and crestfallen expressions on the faces of the players as Domingo German fell from the grace.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa appeared despondent, with his head resting on his forearm in a gesture of dejection. Aaron Judge displayed visible frustration, his jaw tightly clenched while his cap concealed his eyes. Anthony Volpe, on the other hand, was scratching his head, seemingly perplexed by the unfolding events with Domingo German’s worst start.
At that particular moment, the Yankees were facing a daunting 10-0 deficit. Had it not been for IKF’s two-run homer in the ninth, which he achieved after pitching a scoreless inning in relief, the game would have concluded with a resounding 10-0 defeat for New York. However, despite Kiner-Falefa’s late offensive contribution, the final result was a crushing 10-2 loss for the Yankees, leaving them in a state of complete disappointment and dismay.
The flop show by Domingo German
Throughout the initial two months of this seaso, Domingo German proved to be a reliable component of the Yankees’ rotation, which was in dire need of stability due to the absence of Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, Frankie Montas, and more recently, Nestor Cortes, all sidelined by injuries.
However, in his most recent two starts, the performance of the right-handed pitcher has been extremely concerning. In Thursday’s 10-2 defeat against Seattle, Domingo German suffered another consecutive disastrous performance, as he was heavily punished for 10 runs, with eight of them being earned, in a mere 3 ¹/₃ innings.
Following his dismal showing at Fenway Park, where he surrendered seven runs in two-plus innings, Domingo German’s performance continued to be bleak in the recent game, adding another chapter to his rough stretch.
Domingo German reflected on his recent performances and contemplated the potential reasons behind his struggles, considering factors such as mechanics, release points, and adjustments made by opposing hitters.
“It happens,’’ he told. “You think, ‘Is it mechanics? Is it release point? Are [hitters] adjusting?’ ”
The stark contrast in Domingo German’s recent performance is notable, considering his impressive 2.20 ERA from May to early June, which had been the strongest among Yankees starters during that period. However, with his challenging outing in Boston, where he allowed seven runs, his ERA has significantly risen from a season-low 3.49 to 5.10 in just two starts.
Yankees’ trust on the starter was misplaced
Thursday’s game witnessed a distressing display in the first four innings, marking one of the most disorganized and error-prone stretches from the team this season. Both offensively and defensively, the Yankees struggled, resulting in a rather embarrassing performance.
Before Thursday’s game, Aaron Boone conveyed his belief in Domingo German’s ability to bounce back from his disappointing performance against the Red Sox. Boone remained optimistic that the starter would regain the impressive form he displayed in his previous two starts, where he successfully contained the potent lineups of the Dodgers and Red Sox, allowing just two runs over a span of 12 ²/₃ innings.
Following the game, Boone highlighted the concern of Domingo German consistently leaving his breaking balls elevated within the strike zone as a major contributing factor to his struggles. He emphasized the need for the team to rally together and assist Domingo German in regaining his form.
The starter’s performance has been subpar in three out of his last five starts since his ejection due to violating MLB’s rule against using grip-enhancing substances during a game against Toronto on May 16. Following his completion of the 10-game suspension, Domingo German made a comeback and conceded four runs over 6 ¹/₃ innings during the game in Seattle on May 29. This performance was followed by two consecutive impressive outings against Los Angeles and Boston.
However, the recent game against the Red Sox proved to be a turning point for Domingo German, as his performance was equally disappointing. This trend continued on Thursday at Yankee Stadium, where he continued to struggle with his command and faced significant difficulties against the opposing hitters.
Domingo German matched his personal record by surrendering four home runs in the game, and despite the Yankees’ defensive shortcomings, his spin rates were noticeably lower. He proved to be ineffective against the Mariners, unable to effectively counter their offensive prowess.
His decline in performance has been severe, with a noticeable drop-off in his output on the field. Before his disastrous outing at Fenway Park last Friday, he had delivered strong performances in six out of his first seven starts.
In his most recent two starts, Domingo German has experienced a significant surge in his ERA, jumping from 3.49 to 5.10.
Once again, his performance on the mound was subpar, prompting the Yankees to turn to Isiah Kiner-Falefa for relief duties for the second consecutive game. As Clarke Schmidt has shown improvement in his performance over the past month, Domingo German’s position in the rotation could be at risk once Rodon and Cortes are back in action.
