Just five days after Domingo German’s remarkable achievement of pitching the 24th perfect game in MLB history, and the fourth in Yankees history, he struggled to make it through five innings against Baltimore. He gave up nine hits and three runs (two earned), managing to strike out five batters in a span of 4 ²/₃ innings in his latest outing at Yankee Stadium.

Throughout the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Orioles on Monday, there were moments of celebration, with fans offering greetings and highlights and broadcast calls capturing the excitement. However, as Domingo German’s outing came to a close, it served as a reminder of the inconsistencies that had characterized his 2023 season prior to his historic perfect game.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged that Domingo German had given up numerous hits and encountered a lot of traffic during the game. However, Boone emphasized that the team remained competitive and prevented the situation from spiraling out of control. He commended Domingo German for effectively avoiding extra-base hits and minimizing the opposing team’s power-hitting.

Boone assured that while the performance may not have been flawless, the team remained competitive throughout the game.

As Domingo German made his way to the bullpen before the game, the crowd erupted in loud cheers. He took a moment to acknowledge the applause, raising his hands above his head and joining in the excitement. Additionally, the Yankees displayed a video montage showcasing the highlights from Domingo German’s historic performance against Oakland.

Despite his departure from the game in the fifth inning with runners on first and third, Domingo German continued to receive applause from the crowd. He expressed his appreciation for the fans’ support, acknowledging that it meant a great deal to him. He recognized the ongoing relationship of support between him and the fans throughout the years, and the encouragement he receives from them motivates him to continue giving his best and enhances his enjoyment of the games.

However, the lingering impact of Domingo German’s perfect game quickly faded as he struggled against the first three batters he faced in the game. After a flawless first inning, his performance took a downturn as the Orioles opened the second inning with three consecutive singles.

In the second, third, and fourth innings, Domingo German consistently required 20 or more pitches to finish each frame.

The momentum generated from the perfect game was limited in its ability to sustain. Domingo German’s performance lacked the same efficiency and the mesmerizing effectiveness of his curveball.

Instead, Monday marked yet another distinct chapter in Domingo German’s career, which has been characterized by injuries, inconsistencies, a suspension for domestic violence in 2020, and a separate ejection and suspension related to the use of sticky substances this year. It was a departure from the potential repeat of his previous success.

Domingo German acknowledged that his performance on Monday didn’t meet his expectations. According to him, both his fastball and secondary pitches lacked the desired sharpness. He credited the Orioles for making adjustments during the game and effectively putting the ball in play. Domingo German recognized that this is a fundamental aspect of the sport, where opposing teams constantly adapt and challenge pitchers.

Yankees face rotation dilemma

The Yankees face the task of making decisions regarding their rotation as well. The impending return of Carlos Rodon has created a rotation dilemma for the Yankees.

The Yankees currently have six pitchers vying for starting roles. Clarke Schmidt is being considered for a bullpen role, similar to how he was utilized last year.

On Monday, they revisited the memory of the perfect game.

The pregame reception for Domingo German was as expected for a pitcher who had recently achieved a historic feat, rather than someone who had struggled with a 7.77 ERA in his last four starts.
