GREENWOOD LAKE, N.Y. — Baseball fans and luxury travelers now have the chance to live like a Yankee legend. Derek Jeter’s former estate, known as Tiedemann Castle, has joined Airbnb. The estate’s guesthouse, tucked inside the historic property, is now open for bookings at just over $1,300 per night. Since August 2025, the one-bedroom retreat has been available for rent, offering an exclusive getaway inside a setting tied to Jeter’s family history and baseball lore.
A luxury getaway with old-world charm

The guesthouse sits within a four-acre estate overlooking Greenwood Lake in New York’s Hudson Valley. Built more than a century ago, the stone structure reflects a medieval style rarely found in the region. It includes a turret converted into a yoga room, a sauna, and cozy living spaces. Together, they give guests the feeling of stepping into a fairytale castle.
Lisa Mulcahy, founder of Upstate Luxe, the company managing the rental, described the guesthouse as a blend of history and boutique service. “It combines historical details with modern touches tailored to its unique past,” Mulcahy said. Guests can enjoy lakeside tranquility while staying in a place deeply connected to Jeter’s personal story.
Jeter’s property steeped in history

The castle’s origins date back to the early 1900s when a wealthy New York physician built it as a private retreat. In its heyday, the property became a gathering place for the elite. Notable figures such as actress Greta Garbo and baseball great Babe Ruth were known to visit. Its lakefront setting and European-inspired design made it a prime destination during the height of its popularity.
The Tiedemann family became linked to the estate in 1952 when John and Julia Tiedemann, adoptive parents of Jeter’s grandfather, acquired the property. The connection ensured that the castle became part of the Yankee captain’s family roots.
By the early 2000s, the once-grand estate had fallen into disrepair. Jeter, then in the middle of his Hall of Fame career, stepped in to restore it. Reports show he spent nearly $3 million on renovations, reviving the property into a blend of rustic elegance and modern design. His work returned the estate to its former glory while also adding new features that made it a livable and comfortable home.
The road to a sale

Jeter eventually decided to part ways with the property, but selling the castle was far from simple. In 2018, he listed the compound for $14.75 million. The high price kept buyers away, and the property went through several price cuts over the next few years. An auction attempt also failed to secure a sale.
In 2024, the estate returned to the market at $6.3 million. That summer, it finally found a buyer. The deal closed for $5.1 million, well below the initial listing but still a significant figure for a property with so much history attached. The sale ended Jeter’s direct connection to the castle, though the memories of his restoration efforts remain.
More than a guesthouse

The Airbnb rental now only includes the one-bedroom guesthouse, but the larger estate offers much more. The main house measures about 9,000 square feet and includes modern conveniences within its castle-like frame. Inside, visitors will find several kitchens, an elevator, a media room, and a gym.
The grounds also feature a pool house, a boathouse, and a private dock that stretches into Greenwood Lake. Adding to the unique character of the estate is a replica of the Statue of Liberty, an unusual but fitting piece of Americana on the property.
Upscale services available
The current Airbnb listing sets the nightly rate for the guesthouse at more than $1,300. In addition to the accommodations, guests can opt for a menu of luxury services. Offerings include private yoga sessions, catering arranged on-site, and guided tours around the Hudson Valley.
Mulcahy explained that the new owners continue to use the castle as a private retreat on occasion. However, she confirmed there are plans to open more of the property for rental in the future. That expansion could give travelers access to even more of the estate’s amenities and historical charm.
A stay with a celebrity connection
Few short-term rentals carry the same mix of sports history and old-world grandeur. Jeter’s role in restoring the castle adds another layer of significance. Fans of the New York Yankees may find the idea of sleeping under the same roof once owned by their captain especially appealing.
The Airbnb listing offers more than just a night in a luxury guesthouse. It provides a direct link to Jeter’s family story and a rare chance to step into a property that has hosted icons from Ruth to Garbo. For those willing to pay the nightly rate, it is a stay wrapped in both luxury and legacy.
