The New York Yankees faced a major setback this offseason after failing to retain Juan Soto, who opted to sign with the crosstown Mets in free agency. However, despite the star outfielder’s departure, Yankees icon Derek Jeter believes the team has had a productive winter as they prepare for another title push.
“They did a good job,” Jeter said, per Sportscasting.com’s DJ Siddiqi.
“You always want to try to improve your team. I’m sure if you ask anyone in the organization, they have improved as a whole. The great thing about playing for the Yankees is that pretty much every season you have an opportunity to get to the postseason.”

Jeter, who led the Yankees to five World Series championships, noted that the team is coming off its first Fall Classic appearance since 2009 and has reloaded with significant additions.
“They made it to the World Series last year,” Jeter said. “Obviously, they fell a little bit short. But now they’re retooling and getting ready for this season.”
With Soto now wearing Mets colors, the Yankees responded by making several big moves. They signed left-hander Max Fried and former NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt while also acquiring closer Devin Williams and former MVP Cody Bellinger in trades. The roster overhaul signals that the front office remains committed to competing at the highest level.

Soto, 26, delivered one of the best full-season performances of his career in 2024 with the Yankees, slashing .288/.421/.568 with a .989 OPS. He set personal bests in hits (156), runs scored (128), and home runs (41), proving to be a pivotal piece of the lineup.
While his loss is significant, Jeter’s comments reflect confidence in the Yankees’ ability to remain a powerhouse in the American League. With the roster shake-up, all eyes will be on how the Bronx Bombers navigate the upcoming season without Soto’s bat in the middle of the order.
