Yankees current shortstop Anthony Volpe got the first chance to meet his idol Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium. The legendary shortstop spoke about the stand-out character and maturity of the rookie and forecasted his growth in the Yankees ranks.
Derek Jeter has seen the rookie’s highlights more often than he’s witnessed the actual games. However, he seems to be impressed by the young gun, who garnered numerous comparisons to himself.
The Yankees legend mentioned that one of the most noteworthy aspects of the player’s performance was his ability to compartmentalize offensive struggles and not let them affect his defensive play. Derek Jeter highlighted this quality as a sign of the player’s maturity. He also expressed confidence in the player’s growth and development, emphasizing that experience would be key. Derek Jeter acknowledged the challenges of playing in New York with high expectations but praised the player for his overall demeanor and handling of the situation.
“I think the thing that probably stands out the most is from talking with different coaches is the fact that whether he’s had an up and down game or week or month offensively, he doesn’t take it to the defensive side,” Jeter said. “I think that’s says a lot about his maturity. He’s gonna get better. It all comes with experience. It’s tough play here in New York as a young player when expectations are high, but from everything I can tell, the way he handles himself is what stands out the most.”
Anthony Volpe’s Yankees journey in 2023 MLB
Anthony Volpe seized the opportunity to meet his idol, Derek Jeter, during the Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day event at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Although Volpe has faced challenges in his rookie season with a batting line of .214/.293/.397, there have been positive aspects. According to Baseball Reference, he leads the league in defensive Wins Above Replacement (WAR).
In late June, Volpe’s hitting took a positive turn after a dinner with teammate Austin Wells, where they had chicken parm, leading him to make adjustments to his batting stance.
Derek Jeter can relate to many of the challenges Volpe is currently facing, such as high expectations, pressure, slumps, and glimpses of future potential. However, what Derek Jeter did not experience was a rough start to his career. The Yankees made the playoffs in 1995 after the legend’s debut and won the World Series in his first full season. In contrast, Volpe’s rookie season is heading toward an early offseason with the possibility of the team’s first losing record in three decades.
Derek Jeter’s advice to Volpe
In the nine years since Derek Jeter’s retirement, the Yankees have had several shortstops, but none arrived with as much anticipation as Volpe, who, as a New Jersey native and Yankees fan, held a special connection to the team.
Upon Volpe’s inclusion in the Yankees’ roster following spring training, Derek Jeter reached out to offer his congratulations. During the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Yankees’ 1998 championship team, he and Volpe shared a moment, capturing a photo together.
When asked for his advice to Volpe and the other young players on the Yankees, Derek Jeter advised them to have fun. He emphasized that, despite the larger crowds in the Major Leagues, it was still the same game they had played before. The Yankees’ former captain encouraged them not to change their approach drastically and to avoid trying to do things they weren’t used to. He stressed the importance of enjoying themselves, striving for improvement daily, and ultimately focusing on winning as their primary goal.
Regarding the Yankees as a collective unit, Derek Jeter’s advice was straightforward: Discover a method to start winning matches. He emphasized that the team was not eliminated from contention, so their focus should be on winning one game at a time. Derek Jeter suggested that the players should adopt a mentality of taking things day by day, much like what the team members were likely telling each other. He drew a parallel to the successful 1998 team, highlighting their relentless desire to win every day, regardless of their division lead. The Yankees legend underlined the simplicity of the approach: win one game at a time.
