The New York Yankees have lost right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos to the Chicago White Sox, who claimed him off waivers, the team announced Saturday. The move is part of a series of roster adjustments for the Yankees as they continue to reshape their bullpen in the wake of a disappointing season.
Yankees lose RHP De Los Santos to White Sox as roster moves continue
De Los Santos, 28, was acquired by the Yankees at the trade deadline in a deal with the San Diego Padres that also brought pitching prospect Thomas Balboni Jr. to New York. The Yankees sent minor league outfielder Brandon Lockridge to the Padres in return. De Los Santos struggled in his short stint with the Yankees, giving up seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings during an outing against the White Sox on Monday, a performance that likely sealed his fate with the club.
Prior to joining the Yankees, De Los Santos posted a 4.46 ERA in 44 appearances for San Diego. While his overall numbers were mediocre, his underlying metrics suggested he was more effective than his ERA indicated, with a 3.22 SIERA and 3.91 xFIP. De Los Santos had been a reliable arm for the Cleveland Guardians from 2022-23, posting a 3.18 ERA over 120 games, but he struggled to find his footing in New York.
The Yankees’ decision to designate De Los Santos for assignment earlier this week is part of an ongoing effort to retool their bullpen, which has been inconsistent throughout the season. New York’s relievers have shown flashes of brilliance but have been hampered by injuries and underperformance.
With the loss of De Los Santos, the Yankees will need to continue seeking solutions as they head into the final weeks of the season. The team’s bullpen has been a focal point of concern, and further roster moves could be on the horizon as the Yankees look to salvage what remains of their season.
