The New York Yankees are making waves this offseason, showing no signs of slowing down after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets. Following major acquisitions such as left-handed pitcher Max Fried on an eight-year deal and All-Star closer Devin Williams via trade, the Bombers are reportedly setting their sights on Cleveland Guardians’ All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor.
Yankees’ reportedly interested in Naylor
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Yankees are actively considering Naylor as a first base option. The left-handed slugger, who has been the centerpiece of several trade rumors last offseason, could provide the team with the offensive firepower they lacked at first base last season.
Naylor’s potential acquisition appears tied to ongoing negotiations between the Yankees and the Chicago Cubs for former MVP Cody Bellinger. Heyman recently shared on X (formerly Twitter): “Still a $ gap in Bellinger trade talk with Yankees and Cubs as of this minute. It’s a matter of ‘who blinks first,’ if ever.”
If the Yankees manage to secure Bellinger, their need for Naylor would diminish. However, if talks with the Cubs stall, New York might pivot aggressively toward a deal with the Cleveland star.
Naylor, 27, is coming off a career-best season, belting 31 home runs and driving in 108 RBIs. His left-handed power and defensive prowess would fill a significant gap at first base for the Yankees, who struggled at the position last season. Injuries to Anthony Rizzo and underwhelming production from other players left New York searching for consistency in the infield.
Though his bat would bolster the Yankees’ lineup, seeing Naylor in pinstripes might take some getting used to—for both Cleveland and New York fans. His history with New York ace Gerrit Cole, stemming from a tense playoff encounter in 2022, only adds to the intrigue. Naylor famously “rocked the baby” after homering off Cole in the postseason, an act Yankees fans mocked when he returned to Yankee Stadium.
Potential domino effect

Acquiring Naylor would have a ripple effect on the Yankees’ lineup configuration. His presence could push Giancarlo Stanton into a more permanent designated hitter role while giving manager Aaron Boone flexibility with defensive alignments. Additionally, Naylor’s left-handed bat would add balance to a right-handed-heavy lineup.
With the market still fluid, the Yankees have positioned themselves as one of the most active teams this offseason. If they strike out on Bellinger, expect negotiations with Naylo to intensify. Given his proven track record and fiery competitive edge, a potential move to New York could be a game-changer in the American League.
