In a crucial moment during the eighth inning of the Subway Series opener between the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, Clay Holmes took the mound. The Mets had the bases loaded with only one out, and it was a make-or-break situation for the Yankees. Clay Holmes stepped up and pitched skillfully, escaping the jam without allowing any runs.

This pivotal moment had a significant impact on the game. Despite being down by four runs earlier, the Yankees mounted an impressive comeback against Max Scherzer. They eventually won the game 7-6, marking a thrilling victory in the Subway Series opener at Citi Field.

Best ever performance by Clay Holmes

On Tuesday night, Clay Holmes showcased his dominant pitching skills, relying on an impressive sinker-slider combination reminiscent of his All-Star form from the previous year. In a crucial moment with the Yankees holding a slim one-run lead, Clay Holmes struck out Francisco Lindor and Starling Marte to preserve the advantage. The pivotal play followed Josh Donaldson’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly, which proved to be the decisive run in the Yankees’ thrilling 7-6 victory over the Mets.

Clay Holmes expressed his enthusiasm for the game, stating that pitching in such moments was something he had always dreamed of. He acknowledged the great atmosphere of a Yankees-Mets matchup and emphasized his satisfaction in being able to contribute to the team’s victory during a crucial moment. As a competitor, he highlighted that such situations are the ones he desires to be a part of.

“It’s fun. These are the types of moments that you dream about pitching in,” Clay Holmes said. “This is always a great atmosphere; Yankees-Mets. To be able to come in during a big moment and help the team win, as a competitor, that’s the type of situation that you want to be in.”

Due to a challenging start in April, Caly Holmes faced some difficulties maintaining the closer’s role, which led manager Aaron Boone to reassess the bullpen strategy based on leverage and matchups. Despite this adjustment, Clay Holmes has regained his impressive form and has been highly effective in his recent performances. In his last 19 appearances, he has allowed only one run, resulting in an outstanding ERA of 0.47. Additionally, he has consistently recorded strikeouts at a rate of more than one per inning.

DJ LeMahieu, who observed Clay Holmes’ remarkable 17-pitch escape from third base, shared his enthusiasm, noting that it was an impressive performance. He acknowledged that Holmes has been performing exceptionally well throughout the year, with the past few weeks being particularly outstanding. LeMahieu mentioned that Holmes exhibited great control, throwing strikes consistently, and it seemed like his velocity had increased, indicating his arm was in good condition.

Yankees bullpen reverses Severino’s bad outing

Luis Severino’s recent struggles continued as he had a tough outing for the third consecutive start. He gave up six runs, five of them earned, on seven hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. The game started with Brandon Nimmo hitting a home run off Severino. Despite feeling confident in his fastball, Severino only managed to generate seven swings and misses in a 104-pitch performance.

According to Boone, he believed that Severino started to improve his performance from the third inning onward, which gave him hope of securing a win. Despite a visit to the mound in the fifth inning, Severino gave up a single to Luis Guillorme that brought in a run and tied the game until Donaldson’s sacrifice fly.

Severino acknowledged that he did not feel satisfied with his performance, noting that he had not observed any personal improvement. He recognized the impact of his current struggles on the team and admitted the need to identify and address the underlying issues. He expressed hope that he would be able to make the necessary adjustments in the near future.

In the opening game of the 2023 Subway Series, neither Aaron Judge nor Pete Alonso were present in their lineups. However, fans were still in for an exciting and unpredictable game. The game also featured two balks and a controversial ejection of the Mets’ Drew Smith for using sticky substances. In the end, the Yankees emerged victorious.

Boone described the game as a fun and memorable one. He mentioned the buzz and excitement surrounding the Mets-Yankees rivalry, emphasizing the atmosphere in the stadium. Boone also highlighted the significance of the various impactful moments throughout the game, emphasizing the collective effort of the players involved. He concluded by stating that games like these are enjoyable and memorable experiences.

Save No. 4 for Michael King

Yankees relief pitcher Michael King secured his fourth save of the season. He took the mound in the ninth inning with a one-run lead and effectively closed out the game with a flawless inning, striking out one batter and retiring all three he faced. This season, Michael King has been entrusted with more opportunities in crucial moments of the game, highlighting his growing role in high-pressure situations.

After Clay Holmes pitched the eighth inning, Michael King entered the game in the ninth inning to secure a 7-6 victory for the Yankees by retiring the Mets’ batters in order. This was King’s first save since May 15. So far this season, he has converted 4 out of 6 save opportunities, maintaining an impressive 2.19 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a solid 41:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 37 innings. While King is expected to continue pitching in important situations, it’s likely that Holmes remains the preferred choice for the ninth inning.
