The summer slump of the Yankees, their expanding injured list, botched-up pre-season deals, and costly trade mistakes put general manager Brian Cashman in the dock. Rumors are rife that he is on his way out and may leave after this season. However, team president Randy Levine holds the prospect of saving him.
Fans and analysts are up in arms against Cashman and manager Aaron Boone after the Yankees squandered their 15-game AL East lead in August to a mere 5 games. Two trade deals – Jordan Montgomery to the Cardinals for Harrison Bader and Joey Gally to the Dodgers – turned out to be monumental blunders.
Many think Aaron Judge may not stay if the Yankees continue with Cashman, who is blamed for having leaked info about Judge’s preseason contract rejection.
However, Levine has dispelled all such rumors and has confirmed in his capacity that Brian isn’t going anywhere.
The general manager of the New York Yankees is currently in the final year of his contract with the franchise.
Levine was a guest earlier this week on “The Show,” a baseball podcast hosted by Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman, both of whom are contributors to the New York Post.
According to the Post:
“Although Levine did not specify a time frame for General Manager Brian Cashman. The general manager is likely to continue in his role beyond his 26th season. Levine was complimentary of Cashman but said it’s Hal Steinbrenner’s call, and since that’s the case, no one expects him to change GMs following Cashman’s 25 straight winning years.”
Brian has been the general manager of the Yankees since 1989.
Of course, you should never rule out the possibility of something happening, especially now that the Yankees‘ once-impressive 15.5-game lead in the American League East has been cut to 4.5 games as the second-place Tampa Bay Rays prepare to visit the Bronx for a three-game series at Yankee Stadium starting Friday.
Futures of both Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone are subject to scrutiny after the recent performance of the Yankees. If the Yankees are unable to win their division or if they are eliminated from the postseason at an early stage for a second consecutive year, the clamor to oust them may grow.
After the conclusion of the previous campaign, Cashman showed his support for Boone by renewing the manager’s contract for another three years.
Now comes the time to find out whether Levine and Steinbrenner will continue to support Cashman, who has not brought the Yankees a World Series championship since 2009.
Do you agree with Levine? If Cashman leaves, who should replace him?
