NEW YORK — Oswaldo Cabrera has kept working in his recovery at Yankee Stadium from a fractured left ankle, taking grounders at first base over the past two days. The 25-year-old continues to show progress, though the Yankees maintain little expectation that he will rejoin the roster this season.

Manager Aaron Boone has made clear that Cabrera’s return in 2025 is unlikely. The organization is emphasizing his long-term health rather than a push for late-season contributions.

Cabrera sustained the injury on May 12 against the Seattle Mariners. The incident came in the ninth inning when he attempted to score from third on a fly ball to right. Replay showed his ankle twisting awkwardly as he landed, leaving him in visible pain on the field.

Cabrera maintains positive outlook on recovery timeline

Even with the team’s cautious stance, Cabrera has stayed upbeat about his progress. Before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Somerset Patriots’ TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, he shared an encouraging update with reporters.

“I’m doing great,” Cabrera said. “We are killing the rehab right now, but we are in a path that we have to calm down a little bit because we are getting so [many] good things quick, but the cartilage is still a little bit weak. So, we have to calm down a little bit, keep working up, keep progressing all those things with pressure and then I know everything will be fine.”

The Venezuela native admitted the window for a 2025 return is small, though he has not ruled it out.

“We are working on that,” he told reporters, according to The Trentonian. “Obviously it’s not a big window in that, but we are still working on that. We have to see, we have to just keep working to see what part we are in.”

Cabrera’s 2025 performance before injury setback

Oswaldo Cabrera underwent ankle surgery in New York on May 15, 2025, following a fracture and is unlikely to return during the 2025 season.

Prior to the ankle injury, Cabrera had become a steady piece in the Yankees’ lineup. He appeared in 34 games this season, posting a .243 average with one home run and 11 RBIs.

His slash line of .243/.322/.308 showed reliable production from a versatile defender who could handle multiple infield roles. His injury was a major setback for the Yankees’ roster depth and Boone’s in-game flexibility.

Cabrera’s ability to move across the diamond had been a key factor in the club’s early-season roster management.

Medical team takes conservative approach with recovery

The Yankees’ medical staff has built a deliberate rehabilitation plan following Cabrera’s surgery. Initial evaluations indicated he was unlikely to play again this season.

His own comments about needing to “calm down a little bit” in rehab confirm that the staff is closely monitoring his progress. The cartilage weakness he mentioned adds complexity to the recovery process.

New York has been cautious with similar lower-body injuries in the past and appears intent on ensuring full recovery before allowing him back to regular baseball activity.

Somerset Patriots appearance highlights community connection

Cabrera’s ceremonial first pitch for the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate underscored his connection with the organization’s development pipeline. The Somerset Patriots hosted the Hartford Yard Goats that night in an Eastern League matchup, giving fans a chance to see the injured Yankee in person.

The moment also allowed Cabrera to stay engaged with the sport during his absence from major league play.

Injury timeline creates roster planning challenges

New York Yankees’ utility star Oswaldo Cabrera needs ankle surgery following a fracture while scoring a run against the Mariners, Monday, May 12, 2025, in Seattle.

The Yankees have had to adjust their infield depth since Cabrera’s absence. His versatility provided reliable coverage across the infield. Losing that option forced the team to explore alternatives after he was placed on the injured list following the May 12 game.

Medical evaluations determined surgery was necessary to stabilize the ankle fracture. Recovery for this type of injury, especially with cartilage involvement, usually spans several months. The Yankees have made clear they will not jeopardize Cabrera’s career by accelerating his return.

Fan favorite status adds emotional element to recovery

Cabrera has built a strong fan following since reaching the majors. His energy, hustle, and flexibility on defense have made him a favorite among Yankees supporters.

Fans have consistently shown support for his recovery through social media, often expressing patience for a full recovery rather than risking setbacks.

His upbeat approach during the rehab process has only added to his reputation as a selfless player determined to come back stronger. Cabrera’s impact has extended beyond the field, making him one of the most well-liked figures in the Yankees’ clubhouse.
