Aaron Boone has always been the face of measured optimism, but as the Yankees inch closer to the postseason, his tone has shifted.

After the misery of 2023, when the Yankees not only missed the playoffs but did so in a fashion that left fans and critics shaking their heads, Boone finds himself overseeing a team on the verge of something much bigger.

The Bronx Bombers have transformed from a team in disarray to a powerhouse built for October, and Boone is keenly aware of that change.

Boone’s shift in tone as playoffs loom

Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, gave an interview after the team's 11-2 win on September 17, 2024. He stated that the roster, led by Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, is significantly better than the one in 2023.

Following Tuesday night’s 11-2 rout of the Mariners, Boone didn’t mince words when reflecting on the season. “We’re just better,” Boone said in his postgame chat with YES Network.

“Last year, we weren’t a great team. But this year, we’ve come together in ways that make us believe we can do something special.”

This win was more than just another notch in the standings—it was a showcase of the firepower and depth that now define the Yankees. A lineup headlined by Gleyber Torres, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge shredded Mariners starter Bryan Woo, knocking him out in the fifth inning.

Juan Soto’s two-run shot, his 40th of the season and the 200th of his career, left no doubt that New York is a force, with Judge continuing to stack RBIs like it’s a personal vendetta. He finished the night with four, pushing his season total to 136.

On September 17, 2024, Jasson Dominguez hit his first home run of the season while donning the Yankees uniform.

The Yankees are in a position few could have envisioned after last year’s debacle. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to one, and they hold a four-game lead in the AL East—the largest it’s been since June. But Boone’s not celebrating yet. “Blinders on,” he said before the game. “The job’s not done. We’re not even close to where we need to be.”

This turnaround doesn’t just happen. The Yankees have been meticulous in constructing a team capable of contending. Soto’s midseason acquisition, a blockbuster that sent shockwaves across the league, has paid off. Add in the arrival of Jasson Dominguez and the steadying presence of Austin Wells, and New York has found a blend of veterans and young talent that gives them flexibility and firepower in equal measure.

Jasson Dominguez’s first home run of the season came Tuesday, part of a relentless attack that buried Seattle early. Austin Wells added a three-run double to blow the game wide open, reinforcing just how deep this lineup runs. And while the offense stole the show, the pitching was quietly effective. Luis Gil, despite early command struggles, battled through five innings of one-run ball. He didn’t have his best stuff, but with the bases loaded in the first inning, a gutsy play saw Victor Robles tagged out trying to steal home. That was all the break Gil needed to settle in.

The bullpen has been a story of redemption, and Tuesday was no different. Marcus Stroman, making his first relief appearance of the season after being removed from the rotation, was lights out. He tossed three innings of one-run ball and picked up the save, helping keep the high-powered Mariners at bay.

As New York closes in on the playoffs, it’s hard to overstate the significance of Judge and Soto both reaching the 40-homer mark. The pair became just the third set of Yankees teammates to do so in the same season, joining legends Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle (1961), and Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, who accomplished it three times. It’s a nod to the franchise’s storied history and a reminder that this year’s team is built to add to that legacy.

With a chance to clinch their postseason berth as early as Wednesday night, Boone’s Yankees are on the brink of something they’ve been chasing since the season started. But for all the fireworks and milestones, there’s a singular focus in the clubhouse. The Yankees know the real work is just beginning.
