Aaron Boone has a clear message for anyone speculating about Cody Bellinger‘s role with the Yankees: slow down. While addressing the swirling rumors about Bellinger’s position, Boone also took the opportunity to highlight the impact of Devin Williams, one of the newest Bronx Bombers.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday during Max Fried’s introductory press conference, Boone addressed recent reports claiming Bellinger was guaranteed the center field job following his trade from the Cubs. Boone, however, was quick to dispel those rumors.

“That’s fake news,” Boone said, shutting down the idea that a decision had been made. “We haven’t locked in anything yet. Cody brings versatility, and we’re keeping our options open.”

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that Bellinger had been informed he’d play center field, a move that would shift Aaron Judge back to right field. While the report seemed plausible, Boone’s comments suggested the Yankees are still weighing their options, especially with Jasson Domínguez expected to make an impact in 2025. Domínguez, coming off a season derailed by injuries, could factor into the outfield mix, either in center or left field.

Bellinger’s defensive metrics in center field have declined in recent years, but Boone praised his flexibility. “Cody’s ability to play center, left, and first base is huge for us,” he said. “It’s about creating the best matchups and maximizing our lineup.”

Devin Williams to anchor Yankees bullpen

The Yankees have also bolstered their bullpen, acquiring Devin Williams in a trade with the Brewers. Boone confirmed that Williams, a two-time NL Reliever of the Year, will serve as the closer in 2025. “Devin’s track record speaks for itself,” Boone said. “He’s been one of the best in the game for a while now, and we’re thrilled to have him.”

Williams’ arrival comes after the Yankees traded Nestor Cortes Jr. and infield prospect Caleb Durbin to Milwaukee. With Fried joining the rotation, the Yankees had a surplus of starting pitching, making Cortes expendable. Boone acknowledged the tough decision but emphasized the importance of adding an elite reliever. “Losing a guy like Nestor is never easy, but this was about making the team better,” Boone said.

Williams’ presence doesn’t mean Luke Weaver, who excelled as the Yankees’ closer late in 2024, will be sidelined. Boone made it clear that Weaver will still play a significant role. “Weaver earned his opportunities, and he’ll continue to pitch in big spots,” Boone said.

Weaver and Williams form a formidable back-end duo, a significant upgrade for a bullpen that struggled at times last season. Williams, 30, boasts a career 1.83 ERA, while Weaver posted a 2.89 ERA and delivered in the postseason with a 1.76 ERA and a 0.65 WHIP.

With the Yankees making significant roster moves, Boone emphasized flexibility and depth as the team’s priorities for 2025. “Whether it’s Cody in center or Devin in the ninth, we’re focused on putting ourselves in the best position to win,” Boone said.
