TORONTO — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone delivered a stunning admission Wednesday, taking full responsibility for his team’s bullpen struggles while the organization promoted right-hander Clayton Beeter from Triple-A to address mounting relief issues.

The Yankees designated Geoff Hartlieb for assignment after his disastrous 43-pitch outing in Tuesday’s 12-5 defeat. Beeter’s arrival marks his third stint with the club as New York desperately seeks stability in their crumbling relief corps.

Boone’s rare moment of accountability came amid growing criticism of his bullpen management during the Yankees’ recent collapse.

“It’s on me. I got to do a better job of getting those guys in positions where they can be successful,” Boone said.

The Yankees’ relief pitching has imploded during their most crucial period of the season. The unit has surrendered 19 earned runs across 18 innings in their last four games, contributing to New York’s alarming 13-19 record over their past 32 contests.

Fernando Cruz’s oblique strain has further depleted the bullpen depth. Multiple relievers have been overworked as Boone scrambles to find reliable options in high-leverage situations.

The Yankees manager acknowledged the excessive workload on his remaining arms.

“Some of those guys have been leaned on heavily,” Boone said.

The admission reflects a fundamental breakdown in bullpen strategy that has transformed what was once a strength into a glaring weakness. The Yankees’ division lead has completely evaporated during this stretch of poor relief pitching.

Beeter returns with high expectations

Beeter brings intriguing potential to the Yankees’ bullpen despite his checkered history with the organization. The 26-year-old right-hander was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022 as part of the Joey Gallo trade.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 220 pounds, the Texas Tech product has converted from starter to reliever this season. His fastball-slider combination features a heater that reaches 98 mph, making him an attractive option for short relief appearances.

Beeter overcame a shoulder injury that nearly required surgery to start the 2025 season. His minor league performance has been impressive, posting a 2.14 ERA with 35 strikeouts over 21 innings across three levels.

His Triple-A numbers were particularly encouraging. Beeter dominated at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a 1.53 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.

However, control remains a concern. He has issued 17 walks in 19 appearances, suggesting command issues that could prove problematic in pressure situations.

“He’s really talented and hopefully he can come up here and carve out a spot for himself in the bullpen,” Boone said.

Previous Yankees stint showed both promise. problems

Beeter’s 2024 appearance with New York was brief and underwhelming. He pitched in just three games, recording a 4.91 ERA across 3.2 innings before shoulder problems ended his season.

The injury setback delayed his development but also allowed the organization to refine his role. The Yankees have abandoned plans to develop him as a starter, instead focusing on maximizing his stuff in relief appearances.

His fastball-slider mix projects better in shorter outings. The Yankees are betting on his ability to generate swings and misses when the bullpen cannot afford mistakes.

Boone faces management questions

Boone’s acknowledgment of responsibility represents his most direct admission of tactical errors in recent memory. The comment comes after widespread criticism of his bullpen usage, particularly following Devin Williams’ misuse in Wednesday’s 11-9 loss.

Former AL pitching coach observations have highlighted structural problems with the Yankees’ relief approach.

Beeter’s promotion may signal a shift in bullpen philosophy. While unlikely to immediately handle high-leverage situations, his presence could provide clarity to muddled role definitions.

Prospect rankings reflect Yankees faith

MLB Pipeline ranked Beeter as the Yankees’ No. 20 prospect entering 2025. The ranking demonstrates continued organizational belief in his potential despite previous setbacks.

His development path has been unconventional, moving from starter to reliever while battling injuries. The Yankees’ patience may finally pay dividends if he can harness his stuff consistently.

The organization views him as more than just organizational depth. His promotion suggests a genuine belief that he can contribute to their playoff push.

Beeter’s emergence could change that narrative three years later. If he provides bullpen stability, the trade may finally yield meaningful returns for New York.

His success would validate the organization’s player development system while providing much-needed relief depth.

Championship hopes hang in balance

The Yankees remain tied atop the AL East despite their recent struggles. Marcus Stroman’s inconsistent return from injury has placed additional pressure on the bullpen to maintain leads.

Boone’s willingness to accept blame represents a positive step, but on-field results must improve. The Yankees cannot afford continued bullpen collapses with division rivals capitalizing on their mistakes.

Beeter’s arrival won’t solve every problem, but his presence could stabilize a unit desperately needing reliable arms. The Yankees’ championship aspirations may depend on whether their newest reliever can deliver when it matters most.

Baseball minds knowledge now the issues that this team been showing for over a month. Boone is not a good baseball manager that does the smart things, a sac. bunt, playing pitcher matchups, walking a hot hitter when 1st base is open, steal a base, ply hit and run. He has made this team so borring and he really needs to stop making excuses for players and pretending that the team is playing good baseball when tbey show day in and day out that they’re not playing good. Volpe needs to be sat for at least 3 games or send down to AAA. So many things that been wrong with this team and been waiting and expecting to fix itself when we all know that they’re are a .500 team that played over expectations for the first 2 months of the season.
