New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone addressed concerns surrounding Giancarlo Stanton‘s absence from the team’s recent season-opening road trip finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Boone assured fans that the slugger’s omission was not a direct consequence of his current struggles at the plate.

According to Boone, Giancarlo Stanton’s absence was part of a predetermined strategy for the season. The plan called for the hard hitter to sit out two of the seven games on the trip, which took the Yankees to Houston and Phoenix. In his absence, Aaron Judge seamlessly transitioned into the designated hitter role, while Trent Grisham, renowned for his defensive prowess, manned center field.

Speaking before Wednesday’s game, Boone elaborated on the decision. He explained that Giancarlo Stanton’s day off aligned with the day game following a night game, taking into account the pitching rotation. Boone emphasized the importance of implementing strategic rest days based on such considerations.

There’s no denying Giancarlo Stanton’s early-season challenges. He currently holds a modest .150 batting average with just one home run in 20 at-bats across five games. On Tuesday night, he struck out in all three of his plate appearances, contributing to the Yankees’ first loss of the season, a 7-0 defeat to the Diamondbacks, after their initial five-game winning streak.

Despite Giancarlo Stanton’s slow start, Boone exuded optimism, expressing unwavering confidence in the slugger’s ability to regain his form. It’s worth noting that his current slump follows a disappointing 2023 season, where he registered career lows in both batting average (.191) and OPS (.695). Additionally, a hamstring strain sidelined him for 46 games, starting in mid-April and lasting until early June.

Despite Giancarlo Stanton’s recent hitting woes, Yankees manager Aaron Boone remains unfazed, insisting there’s no cause for alarm. While acknowledging his .150 batting average and lone home run in five games, Boone emphasizes the veteran slugger’s good health and overall vitality. At 34, Giancarlo Stanton is the Yankees‘ second-oldest player, but Boone highlights his physical readiness.

“He’s healthy,” Boone declared. “He’s got the energy, the power is still there. It’s just about getting him locked in. Even when Stanton’s in a groove, sometimes the results aren’t always picture-perfect.”

Boone elaborated on Giancarlo Stanton’s condition, stressing the importance of maximizing his bat speed and ensuring he’s physically optimized. He emphasized the need for him to find his timing and capitalize on opportunities to unleash his powerful swing. Boone added that they’re continually working with Giancarlo Stanton on these aspects to unlock his full potential.

Following a challenging start to the series, where Giancarlo Stanton went hitless with five strikeouts in the first two games, he did manage a solo home run in the ninth inning of a 7-1 victory against Houston. This glimpse of power aligns with Boone’s optimism.

Giancarlo Stanton’s health is a key factor. He’s shown significant improvement compared to the numerous injuries that plagued him since 2018. Additionally, his offseason focus on conditioning has translated into improved running ability.

Early optimism for Giancarlo Stanton’s performance stemmed from his strong finish in Grapefruit League games. After a slow start (1-for-15 in his first six games), he displayed improvement by going 12-for-26 with four home runs in his last nine games, concluding with a .317 average. However, a hitless streak in exhibition games in Mexico City foreshadowed his current struggles at the plate.

Despite the recent slump, Boone remains confident in Giancarlo Stanton’s abilities. He acknowledges the slugger possesses the necessary physical tools for success and can ignite a hot streak at any moment. However, Boone recognizes that Giancarlo Stanton, like any hitter, may experience temporary dips in performance as he finds his rhythm at the start of the season. The focus remains on supporting and helping him recapture his hitting prowess.
