Ben Rice is making his presence felt early in the New York Yankees’ 2025 spring training campaign, potentially positioning himself as an unexpected solution to the team’s designated hitter concerns.

The 26-year-old prospect, who added 10 pounds of muscle during the offseason, immediately showcased his enhanced power by ripping a 111.1 mph single in his first spring at-bat against the Minnesota Twins. He followed that impressive debut with another RBI single, demonstrating that his physical transformation isn’t merely cosmetic.

“I think the ball’s coming off the bat harder, for sure,” Rice said at Steinbrenner Field, according to the New York Post. “Putting more mass on the ball, so it’s going to come off harder.”

Rice’s emergence comes at a potentially opportune time for the Yankees, who face lingering questions about Giancarlo Stanton’s durability. While the slugger remains a formidable power threat when healthy, his injury history has forced the organization to consider alternative options.

The Yankees opted for roster flexibility rather than signing a designated hitter specialist during the offseason. This approach could create an opening for Rice, who is positionally versatile as both a catcher and a first baseman.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has expressed confidence in Rice’s development. “I’m excited about Ben,” Boone said earlier this week in Fort Myers. “I think he’s going to be a really good hitter in the league. He’s made huge strides in his body this winter. He’s added really good weight and strength, and it shows up in his testing. I think he’s a guy [that can] be an impact hitter in the league.”

Transforming near-misses into home run

Ben Rice appears at the 2025 Yankees spring training camp in Tampa, FL. with a new physical transformation.

Rice’s 2024 major league debut showed promise but ultimately fell short of expectations. Despite strong underlying metrics in barrel percentage and exit velocity, many of his hardest-hit fly balls died at the warning track. This frustrating pattern suggested that a modest power increase could significantly improve his production.

The left-handed hitter’s natural swing path already appears well-suited for Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch. With his offseason strength gains, those warning-track outs could potentially become home runs in 2025.

Rice’s minor league numbers hint at his substantial offensive potential. He posted a 155 wRC+ in Double-A and an even more impressive 174 wRC+ in Triple-A last season, indicating he performed 55% and 74% better than average hitters at those respective levels.

Powering through a crowded Yankees roster

Rice faces significant competition for playing time. Veteran Paul Goldschmidt occupies first base for 2025, while Austin Wells handle catching duties. The designated hitter role also features competition from Everson Pereira, who homered in Tuesday’s game against the Twins but remains limited defensively while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Veteran Dom Smith further complicates the picture, having followed Rice’s second single with a two-run home run of his own, demonstrating that the competition for roster spots remains intense.

Despite these obstacles, Rice’s defensive versatility could prove valuable. While not projected as an everyday starter at catcher or first base, his ability to handle both positions gives the Yankees additional roster flexibility when constructing their bench.

Refining his approach

Adding muscle addresses only part of Rice’s development needs. To establish himself at the major league level, he must improve his pitch recognition and plate discipline after struggling with high whiff rates in 2024.

Such adjustment periods are common for young hitters transitioning to the majors, and the Yankees remain confident that Rice’s natural hitting ability will translate with increased experience against top-level pitching.

Long-term potential

On July 6, 2024, Ben Rice first baseman hit three home runs against the Red Sox, leading New York to a 14-4 victory.

Even if Rice doesn’t break camp with the Yankees, his future with the organization appears promising. With Goldschmidt on a one-year contract, first base could become available in 2026, potentially giving Rice a path to regular playing time if his development continues.

His immediate focus remains on maximizing his current opportunity. Whether that means securing an Opening Day roster spot or positioning himself as the first call-up when needs arise, Rice’s physical transformation and early spring results have undoubtedly captured the organization’s attention.

A timely help for Yankees

The emergence of Rice represents perfect timing for a Yankees team facing uncertainty in its offensive depth. If Stanton encounters health issues as he has in recent seasons, the Yankees will need internal options to provide power production.

While Rice may not match Stanton’s peak offensive output, his left-handed power and positional flexibility could make him a valuable contributor to a team with championship aspirations. His continued development bears watching as the Yankees finalize their roster construction for the 2025 campaign.

As spring training progresses, Rice’s ability to maintain his early momentum could transform him from an interesting prospect into a legitimate major league contributor for a Yankees team looking to maximize its offensive potential in pursuit of a championship.
