Yankees rookie catcher Austin Wells continues to impress both fans and teammates with his big-league caliber. While his early praise in his debut month primarily centered around his defensive skills, his batting prowess has started to make a more resounding statement in recent days.

Austin Wells showcased his batting abilities by launching a two-run home run off Blue Jays’ closer Jordan Romano during the ninth inning on Tuesday night. This decisive hit propelled the Yankees to a 2-0 victory.

With this being his second home run in consecutive days, and the third in his last five games, Austin Wells served as the sole source of offensive output in a contest that had, up until that point, been a battle of pitchers between Michael King and Kevin Gausman. Despite the Yankees finding themselves out of playoff contention, they managed to temporarily thwart the Blue Jays, who are vying for their own postseason berth, from inching closer to that goal.

In his last eight games, Austin Wells has compiled an impressive 8-for-29 batting record, which includes three home runs and three doubles, a notable improvement after a rather subdued start to his big-league batting career.

As he climbed through the Yankees’ ranks, Austin Wells garnered attention for his big-hitting prowess in the minors. But when he initially entered the major leagues, the rookie catcher dedicated a significant portion of his energy to refining his defensive skills. He welcomed the opportunity to orchestrate games for some of the most accomplished pitchers he had ever worked with. The catcher remained confident that his batting abilities would eventually come to the forefront, as they had in the past.

Upon his debut in the majors, Austin Wells faced more uncertainties about his defensive performance than his batting. Despite garnering considerable acclaim for his work behind the plate, his offensive contributions were notably absent during the initial games of his career. In his first eight appearances for the Yankees, Austin Wells recorded just three hits in 29 at-bats, resulting in a meager .103 batting average. However, recent developments have seen Wells rekindle his reputation as a formidable hitter.

Before the series opener at Rogers Centre on Tuesday, Austin Wells demonstrated notable progress by going 7-for-25 (.280) in his last seven games. Over his last four matchups, he achieved two multi-hit games and secured his first two career home runs, one of which was a game-tying shot that contributed to a victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday.

This marked the third home run for Wells in the Major Leagues, and he is regarded as the Yankees’ eighth-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. There’s potential for him to contend with Jose Trevino for playing time as a catcher in the upcoming season.

After his call-up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at the beginning of September, Wells initially faced some difficulties at the plate. However, he has been actively making adjustments to improve his performance, including modifications to his batting stance to allow for a smoother swing through the hitting zone. Tuesday’s home run was his second in as many games, and he has managed to hit home runs in three of his last five outings.

Attitude matters for Wells

The rookie catcher conveyed that he had faced a different style of pitching compared to his experiences in the minor leagues. He acknowledged the adjustment was required due to this change in pitching approach and the challenge of encountering unfamiliar pitchers. Nevertheless, he noted that as he accumulated more at-bats, he started to feel significantly more at ease and confident in his performance.

Austin Wells elaborated that in the major leagues, pitchers have predominantly utilized off-speed pitches in the initial stages of the count, while steering clear of delivering pitches in the central part of the strike zone. In response to this, the 24-year-old Wells is actively focusing on refining his ability to judge pitches and exercise better plate discipline.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone also admitted to seeing his improvement and development progressing positively over time. Boone remarked that Austin Wells’ performance against Arizona exemplified why there was excitement surrounding his capabilities as a batter.

During Monday’s discussion, Austin Wells emphasized that despite the Yankees’ removal from playoff contention, he and the team’s other young talents recognize the significance of each at-bat, both individually and collectively.

On Tuesday, Austin Wells conveyed that he has been accustomed to receiving one hittable pitch per at-bat that he can look to drive. However, he has recognized that when he swings at a pitch later in the count and the pitcher throws off speed or off the plate, they don’t need to provide him with a pitch over the center of the plate. Therefore, he believes that exercising greater patience at the plate will work to his advantage.

Austin Wells is set to have additional opportunities to enhance his performance in the big leagues as the Yankees conclude their season on Sunday. While it’s unlikely that he will be the catcher for Gerrit Cole on Wednesday, he can anticipate having ample chances to step up to the plate in the upcoming games.

The rookie catcher expressed his excitement, describing the experience as “unbelievable.” He mentioned that delivering a crucial hit late in the game is precisely why he plays baseball. He shared his satisfaction with the moment and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be on the field in such a pivotal situation.

According to manager Aaron Boone, it’s been apparent from the beginning that Austin Wells possesses a natural hitting ability when he steps into the batter’s box. Recently, the rookie has translated that talent into tangible results, showcasing an improved ability to hit for power. Boone specifically commended Austin Wells for his solid hit to the opposite field off Romano and noted that he has been consistently delivering strong at-bats.

A guide for Michael King

Austin Wells’ home run ultimately secured the win, with starter Michael King making a compelling argument for inclusion in the Yankees’ rotation for the 2024 season. King demonstrated his ability to minimize damage, even on a night where he struggled with control, issuing five walks in six innings.

In a pivotal moment during the third inning when the bases were loaded and two outs, King found himself in a challenging situation, trailing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a 3-0 count. It was at this juncture that King sought Austin Wells’ counsel, and the catcher came out for a mound visit.

Austin Wells explained that he sensed the need to provide King with a moment of respite as he appeared to be rushing through his pitches. The catcher’s intention was to visit the mound and help King regain his composure by slowing down the game’s pace and allowing him to take a breather.

During that brief encounter, Austin Wells took the opportunity to go over the Yankees’ scouting report on Guerrero with King. After their discussion, King acknowledged the guidance by nodding and proceeded to deliver three consecutive sinker pitches, effectively retiring the side. King expressed his admiration for the rookie catcher, emphasizing that he has been impressed with the catcher’s performance since his initial three games in Houston.

King reflected on Austin Wells’ remarkable qualities, particularly during his time catching for the Yankees. He found Wells’ performance to be particularly impressive because, as a catcher, he has had to manage a rotation filled with highly skilled pitchers. King acknowledged that within the team, there are strong personalities and egos, but Austin Wells has consistently maintained a composed demeanor and possesses the ability to motivate and collaborate effectively with his pitchers. Moreover, King admired Wells for his skill in calming pitchers down when necessary.

According to Austin Wells, his adaptation to the Major Leagues has been made smoother thanks to several members within the clubhouse, with a special mention to the pitchers. He pointed out that he had to quickly acquaint himself with the pitching staff’s various pitching styles and strategies.
