Anthony Volpe, the Gold Glove Award-winning shortstop, experienced a dramatic turnaround in the Yankees’ first game after the All-Star break. Just five days after being cast as the scapegoat in a loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards, he played a pivotal role in the Yankees’ victory to start the second half of the season.

The young shortstop appeared rejuvenated on Friday night, contributing significantly to the Yankees’ 6-1 win over the Rays. Anthony Volpe’s performance included going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, highlighted by a crucial two-out, bases-loaded double in the third inning that extended the Yankees’ lead to 4-0.

Despite strong performances from the team’s star players, it was Anthony Volpe who delivered the most critical hit of the game. His three-run double proved to be a game-changer in front of a packed crowd of 47,036 at Yankee Stadium.

Gerrit Cole, who pitched six innings and allowed only one run for the second consecutive start, praised Volpe’s readiness and impact on the game. The pitcher emphasized Anthony Volpe’s performance significantly influenced the outcome.

“He came out ready to go tonight and it was a game-changer for us,” the Yankees ace said.

This victory marked a positive start to the second half for both Anthony Volpe and the Yankees (59-40), following a challenging conclusion to the first half. The win ensured that the standout efforts of Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Cole did not go in vain.

The Yankees have now won four of their last six games, showing signs of recovery from a difficult 6-17 stretch. Anthony Volpe expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, highlighting the boost provided by Cole’s strong pitching performance.

While Soto (4-for-4 with two doubles and a walk) and Judge (2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI) had outstanding nights, contributions from Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells (three walks) were crucial in the series opener against the Rays (48-49).

Anthony Volpe’s resurgence comes after a struggle leading into the All-Star break, where he batted just .171 with a .433 OPS in his last 35 games, negating his strong start to the season. His difficulties were compounded by a costly error in Sunday’s loss to the Orioles.

However, the 23-year-old used the break to disconnect and refocus, resulting in his strong performance on Friday. This game marked a potential turning point for Anthony Volpe as he aims to regain his early-season form and continue contributing to the Yankees’ success.

Anthony Volpe makes a comeback

After a successful first at-bat resulting in a line-drive single, Anthony Volpe faced a crucial moment in the third inning. With the bases loaded, two outs, and the Yankees holding a slim 1-0 lead, he stepped up to the plate against Rays right-hander Zach Eflin.

The Yankees had previously squandered scoring opportunities in the first two innings, and it seemed they might only manage to push one run across in the third on Alex Verdugo’s groundout. However, Anthony Volpe changed the game’s trajectory with a well-executed swing on a low, inside curveball, driving the ball down the third base line and into left field.

Manager Aaron Boone later praised Anthony Volpe’s resilience and professionalism, especially considering the tough end to the first half of the season. Boone emphasized the importance of the sophomore’s two-out hit, describing it as the game-breaking moment the team had been lacking in recent matches with runners on base.

“It’s who he is,” the Yankees skipper told. “Tough way to end the half. He’s such a good pro and cares so much. For him to come through with a big hit – a big two-out hit. I feel like we’ve had a lot of games where we’ve had traffic and haven’t been able to get that big hit, that was the big back-breaking hit that we needed. Got it. Two outs. Really excited for him and that got us going tonight.”

Eflin initially gained the upper hand in the count, but Anthony Volpe’s double down the third-base line cleared the bases and extended the Yankees’ lead to 4-0. Austin Wells acknowledged the significance of this hit for both the team and the shortstop personally.

“Huge for us, huge for him,” the backstop said.

Anthony Volpe’s potential resurgence in the second half could provide a crucial boost to the Yankees’ lineup. The young shortstop reflected on the benefits of the All-Star break, which allowed him to step back and refine aspects of his game. He expressed confidence in his ability to be a dangerous hitter when in control of his movements.

This performance was more reminiscent of Anthony Volpe’s early-season form, rather than his recent struggles that led to him losing his role as the leadoff hitter. After a strong start to the season, hitting .282 with a .794 OPS through May, his performance had declined over the past six weeks, coinciding with the Yankees’ overall struggles.

Since June 1, Anthony Volpe had been batting just .194 with a .498 OPS, resulting in his removal from the leadoff spot. However, this game marked his third three-RBI performance of the season, potentially signaling a turnaround. Prior to this game, he had been hitting a mere .143 over his previous 20 games.

Anthony Volpe expressed his commitment to taking things day by day and continuing to work on improving his game. He acknowledged the satisfaction that comes from contributing to the team’s success, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to help the team win.

“Having a break, take a step back and work on some stuff,” the Yankees shortstop said. “I feel like when I’m in control of myself and my movements, I feel like I can be dangerous. Taking everything day by day. Definitely been working on stuff. You play to help the team win so when you contribute you feel good.”
