The upcoming Old-Timers’ Day holds particular significance for Yankees’ second-year shortstop Anthony Volpe, a lifelong fan of the team. While last year’s event was a memorable experience for the then-rookie, this Saturday’s celebration, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 2009 World Series victory, strikes an even deeper chord with him.

In an interview with The Post ahead of Friday night’s game against the Rockies—where the Yankees claimed a 3-0 win with Volpe contributing a hit and a run—the young player shared his excitement. The 2009 championship, the only one Volpe has witnessed in his lifetime, makes this year’s Old-Timers’ Day particularly meaningful.

“It was the only one in my lifetime, so that’ll be awesome,” he told. “Last year was definitely special, just to meet and see a bunch of people I look up to.”

This year’s event, the 76th in the Yankees’ storied history, is dedicated to celebrating the members of the franchise’s most recent championship team. Volpe, who was just 8 years old when the Yankees last hoisted the trophy, vividly remembers watching the decisive game with his family at their home in Watchung, New Jersey. But for young Volpe, the highlight came when he skipped school to attend the victory parade through Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes.

The event will feature an impressive lineup, including Hall of Famers Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Alex Rodriguez, making his debut as an Old Timer, and 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui are also set to participate.

Volpe looks to Yankees legends beyond Jeter

Last year, Volpe had the chance to interact with Jeter, who was attending the event for the first time as an Old Timer. Jeter publicly praised Volpe for his strong defensive play, even during offensive struggles. While the details of their conversation remain private, Jeter is known for advising young players to approach Major League games with the same mindset they’ve always had, despite the larger audiences.

Reflecting on his encounter with the Yankees legend, Volpe appreciated the genuine and effortless nature of their exchange. As he prepares for this year’s celebration, Volpe’s enthusiasm for the franchise’s history and its legendary players is evident.

The upcoming Old-Timers’ Day will pay tribute to nine revered members of Monument Park, including seven whose numbers have been permanently retired by the Yankees. This elite group features Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Joe Torre, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, Paul O’Neill, Willie Randolph, and Tino Martinez.

Current Yankees manager Aaron Boone is also slated to participate in the event. Among the honored guests is Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, the MVP of the 1998 ALCS, along with Bucky Dent, the 1978 World Series MVP known for his iconic three-run homer against the Red Sox in the AL East division tiebreaker.

The lineup of stars continues with former manager Joe Girardi and key figures from recent seasons, including CC Sabathia, Nick Swisher, Johnny Damon, and A.J. Burnett. The event will also bring together former Yankees who have transitioned to broadcasting roles with the YES Network, such as David Cone, John Flaherty, and Jeff Nelson.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Yankees have invited the widows of three legendary figures: Diana Munson, Kay Murcer, and Jill Martin, honoring the legacies of Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer, and Billy Martin.

This gathering of Yankees greats spans several eras, giving fans a special chance to celebrate the team’s rich history and reconnect with the players who have shaped its legacy. The event will serve as a poignant reminder of the Yankees’ lasting influence on baseball and the deep bonds that link the team’s storied past to its present.
