In a week where Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the tough decision to give Anthony Volpe some rest, the rookie shortstop responded in dramatic fashion, delivering the longest home run of his career in today’s game.

As the Yankees faced the Oakland Athletics, they secured an incredible 10-0 win in California. In the second inning, with the Yankees up 2-0, Anthony Volpe launched a 421-foot home run, the furthest of his young career.

According to Talkin Yanks statistician Katie Sharp, this blast marks the longest home run Anthony Volpe has hit since joining the Bronx Bombers.

Anthony Volpe’s struggles and recent bench time

On September 21, 2024, Yankees rookie Anthony Volpe smashes a 421-foot home run, marking his longest hit of the season in a 10-0 lead over the Athletics
New York Times

Anthony Volpe’s big hit comes at a pivotal moment. While he’s tallied 12 home runs this season, his offensive struggles have been notable recently. With an OPS sitting at .669 and this marking his first homer in the last 30 days, it’s been a challenging stretch for the young shortstop.

Earlier this week, Boone decided to give Anthony Volpe some time off. After starting 139 consecutive games, Volpe was given a second day off in the span of eight games on Tuesday. At that point, Volpe had been in a serious slump, going 4-for-37 with one walk and 12 strikeouts over his last 11 games. His season average had fallen to .246, and his OPS hovered around .664 through 149 games.

Anthony Volpe’s rookie season has been defined by stretches of brilliance mixed with inconsistency. After a promising 20/20 rookie campaign, Volpe worked hard in the offseason to adjust his swing, aiming to get back to the all-fields approach that made him a standout in the minors. While those changes paid off early in the year, the grind of a long season has exposed his growing pains. Boone, however, remains confident in his young star.

“I’m confident he’ll work through it,” Boone said earlier this week. “He’s made adjustments that have shown results, but there have been struggles too. It’s part of the development process. I still believe he’s on his way to becoming the complete hitter we know he can be.”

Timing Anthony Volpe’s turnaround for October

As the Yankees look toward a potential postseason run, Anthony Volpe’s resurgence could be crucial. Boone is hopeful that Volpe’s recent struggles are behind him, and today’s home run may be the spark the Yankees need. “It’s been a grind, but this could be the turning point we need as we push for October baseball,” Boone said earlier this week.

With October on the horizon, Anthony Volpe’s 421-foot shot could signal that the Yankees’ future star is ready to rise to the occasion when it matters most. For now, his performance today is a promising sign of what could be ahead.

The Yankees FO really has no baseball-centric thought. They are all about analytics. Then people wonder we haven’t won anything in years? Volpe needs a game about every month off, for the 2nd straight season, he has missed only 1 game by September 1. Ridiculous. A player keeps slumping, but they play the guy anyway.
