Yankees began their 1st opening series since 2014 at Busch Stadium without Anthony Rizzo, who was unable to play due to lower-back tightness against the Cardinals.
Rizzo was relieved by the Yankees less than 30 min before the start of their 4-3 loss. Rizzo was out four games from July 5 to 8 due to lower-back tightness and 2 of those games were against Pirates of the NL Central. And the other 2 were against the Red Sox.
Boone didn’t appear to believe Rizzo’s injury would keep him out for an extended period of time.
Rizzo, who was with the Cardinals for a decade, divisional rival Chicago Cubs, has 22 HR, .278 batting average and 81 RBIs, in 154 games against the Cardinals.
When he experienced similar stiffness in early July, he described it as a lower back spasm, which has been a recurring problem in his career.
Due to lower-back issues, Rizzo missed 4 games last month, Aaron Boone Yankees manager said that the first baseman would have undoubtedly started if they had appeared at a crucial stage in the season, and that the team was capitalizing on the best record in baseball.
