In an exclusive interview on the Yankees’ fan Spanish podcast, La Semana de los Bombarderos, former Yankees pitcher José Veras opened up about his incredible journey from a supportive childhood to fulfilling his dreams in pinstripes. From family sacrifices to unexpected mentors, Veras shares the untold stories that shaped his remarkable baseball career.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Veras narrates an astonishing tale of how Alex Rodriguez, a fellow teammate, provided exceptional support to him and other Latino players at the New York Yankees. From helping them buy suits to arranging transportation to his personal tailor, A-Rod’s generosity left a lasting impression on Veras and his teammates.

“Alex helped Canó, Melky, and me with buying suits. He himself would either take us or send a car to pick us up and take us to his personal tailor,” Veras recalls, laughing.

Struggles with the Rays and the turning point

José Veras fondly remembers the unwavering support of his parents, who played a crucial role in his early years. Despite initial dreams of becoming a cadet and engineer, Veras found himself signed by the Tampa Bay Rays in 1998, setting the stage for a career that would take unexpected turns.

Despite impressive performances, Veras faced challenges with the Rays, who seemed reluctant to give him a shot in the Major Leagues. The frustration mounted as he excelled in the Minor Leagues but struggled to secure a promotion. Ultimately, the turning point came when he signed with the Yankees in 2006, opening the door to a new chapter in his career.

Yankees – A world apart

Veras shares his initial hesitation to join the Yankees, revealing that even his family doubted the opportunities that awaited him. However, upon joining the Yankees, he discovered a world apart, with Mariano Rivera becoming a mentor and a guiding force. Veras highlights the unique camaraderie among the Latino players in the 2009 Yankees, emphasizing the positive impact they had on the team.

Lessons from the Yankees

Veras delves into the unmatched professionalism and work ethic of the Yankees, citing influences from legendary players like Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera. He details how their habits shaped his own approach to the game, emphasizing the Yankees’ commitment to excellence in every aspect.

José Veras, now retired and successful in his post-baseball endeavors, reflects on his achievements, including the 2009 championship ring and the pride of representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. As a family-oriented individual, Veras is not only focused on his business ventures but also dedicated to mentoring young players, imparting lessons on financial management and professionalism. This candid interview provides a unique glimpse into the life and career of a pitcher who went from a small town in the Dominican Republic to becoming a cherished part of Yankees history.

Throughout his career, José Veras has been a polarizing figure, both admired and criticized for his outspoken nature and fiery personality. Despite his controversies, his talent and contributions to the Yankees cannot be denied. Veras’ story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of finding mentors and support along the way.
