New York Yankees pitcher Luis Gil has wrapped up a stellar season, earning widespread recognition for his contributions. The hard-throwing right-hander made 29 starts in 2024, amassing a 15-7 record with a solid 3.50 ERA over 151.2 innings. His dominance on the mound not only bolstered the Yankees’ rotation but also earned him the prestigious American League Rookie of the Year Award. Over in the National League, Paul Skenes claimed the honor.
Rookie sensation Luis Gil credits Gerrit Cole and Luis Severino for sharpening his edge
Luis Gil’s emergence was a critical factor in the Bronx Bombers’ success this past season. The 25-year-old rookie credited much of his development to veteran Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, a six-time All-Star and Cy Young contender. During a recent episode of Foul Territory, Gil spoke about Cole’s influence on his growth as a pitcher.
“Gerrit has been a great influence on me,” Gil said through an interpreter. “He has taught me a lot about handling situations and emotions on the mound, as well as attacking hitters. I hope to keep learning from Gerrit in the future.”
The mentorship extended beyond Cole. Gil highlighted how former Yankees pitcher Luis Severino, who spent eight seasons in New York before departing in free agency, also played a pivotal role in his success. Severino, once a promising young ace himself, served as a guide and mentor for Gil during his rookie campaign.
“Luis is like a big brother to me,” Gil said. “He’s always checking in, watching my outings, and giving me tips. After my starts, we’d talk about what I was doing wrong and what adjustments I needed to make.”
Gil’s breakout season places him in elite company. He is the first Yankees pitcher to win the AL Rookie of the Year since Dave Righetti achieved the feat in 1981. The last Yankee to take home the award was Aaron Judge in 2017, following his record-breaking rookie campaign. For Gil, the honor cements his place as one of baseball’s most exciting young talents.
The Yankees’ rotation now looks formidable heading into 2025. With Gerrit Cole at the helm and newcomers like Marcus Stroman delivering reliable innings, the unit is poised to dominate. If Carlos Rodon can rediscover his All-Star form, the Yankees could boast one of the most potent rotations in the American League.
Offensively, retaining superstar Juan Soto will be a priority for the Yankees’ front office. Soto, who delivered clutch performances throughout the postseason, remains a cornerstone of the team’s long-term success. Re-signing him would solidify the Yankees as top contenders once again.
With a rising star like Luis Gil and a roster packed with talent, Yankees fans have plenty to look forward to. The foundation is in place for the team to make a serious push for a World Series title in 2025.
