A half-billion dollars for Aaron Judge? The magic figure remains much above the contract of any MLB player till now. However, the Yankees slugger had an incredible regular season this year and teams are out to outbid each other for him.
According to Leigh Steinberg, one of the best-known sports agents in the United States, Aaron Judge has a chance of signing a contract that could be of $500 million and spread over 10 years. He said this during an interview with Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports.
He told:
“He immediately and dramatically enhances a team’s offensive output. He’s a good team player. And for any team that’s not sold out, he’s an immediate box office draw. So he might be one of the few players who pays for part of his contract in ticket sales.”
The 30-year-old Yankees‘ power hitter turned down a seven-year, $213.5 million deal before the season started. As result, Aaron Judge will be a free agent this winter.
The Los Angeles Angels gave outfielder Mike Trout a 12-year, $426.5 million deal that is the highest in MLB history so far.
Max Scherzer’s three-year, $130 million deal with the New York Mets gives him the highest average salary in the history of Major League Baseball. It is $43.3 million per year.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are also interested in Aaron Judge if he goes on the open market. The San Francisco Giants should also be in the mix. In fact, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media cited an insider source to claim that the Giants won’t allow money to become a problem in signing Aaron Judge.
After meeting with members of the team’s ownership group, the insider revealed that the team wants Judge and is willing to spend whatever it takes to get him. He was quoted saying, “Money won’t be the reason if they miss out.”
Aaron Judge’s price went up because he had a historic season with a new AL homer record. The 30-year-old became the frontrunner to earn American League MVP after breaking the previous record for the league with 62 home runs and challenging for the Triple Crown.
