On Friday at Yankee Stadium, Aaron Hicks‘ night got worse and worse until he was sent to the bench.
The left fielder for the Yankees was taken out of the game against the Rays at the start of the fifth inning. He had made two bad defensive plays in the fourth inning and had to deal with a loud home crowd.
Estevan Florial took over for Hicks in left field. When the crowd heard about the change, they cheered.
Hicks failed to produce a hit in either of his two at-bats and was booed by the crowd after leaving two runners on base in the third inning, but this was just the beginning of his problems.
In the fourth inning, Rays star Wander Franco hit a fly ball to left field with one out and runners on first and second. Hicks ran over to get it, but just as he got to the foul line, he dropped it. He then used the wall to stop himself. Hicks was slow to pick up the ball, probably because he thought it was out. Both Rays scored and Franco reached on a double, giving the Rays a 3-0 lead.
Hicks got boos, and there was a short “Joey Gallo” chant in left field.
The next batter was Randy Arozarena, who hit a line drive over Hicks’s head. Hicks turned around as the ball fell for a double, giving the Rays a 4-0 lead.
Hicks lost his everyday job when Andrew Benintendi joined the Yankees last month. However, injuries to Benintendi and several other Yankees have put him back in the lineup more often. On Friday night, he was the No. 3 hitter.
Fans had started to like Hicks again earlier this week after he hit a three-run double on Wednesday and another double on Thursday to keep a rally going in the ninth inning. However, they quickly stopped liking him again on Friday night.
