Dodgers push Yankees to the brink with 3-0 World Series lead

Yankees Stadium opened this World Series with hope, but now finds itself facing the drama of a daunting 3-0 series deficit as the Dodgers sit just one win away from clinching the title.

Oh My, Verdugo!

Alex Verdugo sent a jolt through the Bronx, launching a homer over the right-field wall to cut Los Angeles’ lead in half. The Dodgers’ shutout bid is broken, but with two outs, the Yankees need two more runs to keep their hopes alive.

Kiké Hernández extends Dodgers’ lead to 4-0 in sixth

In the sixth inning, Kiké Hernández provided a critical insurance run with an RBI single, stretching the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0. As the Yankees attempted to respond, Brusdar Graterol and Ryan Brasier shut down any hopes of a comeback, executing high-stakes strikeouts and precise defensive plays to keep New York scoreless. The Dodgers’ combined effort on both sides of the ball underscored their dominance as they moved closer to a commanding series lead.

Yankees struggle early as Dodgers capitalize on Schmidt and Trevino’s vulnerabilities

The Yankees fell behind 3-0 after Mookie Betts’ bloop single to right field capped a nine-pitch at-bat against Clarke Schmidt. Betts’ RBI hit scored Tommy Edman, who had reached on a walk and skillfully avoided a double play, exposing New York’s early-game challenges. Schmidt, who led MLB starters with a .154 opponent average with runners on base, couldn’t find an answer as Betts’ blooper landed. Adam Ottavino reflected on the emotional toll, saying, “Those types of hits really hurt the soul,” while teammate Trevor Williams described the frustration as “1,000 years off purgatory.”

Adding to the Yankees’ difficulties, Freddie Freeman’s first-inning home run marked his fifth consecutive World Series game with a homer, tying George Springer’s record and giving the Dodgers a boost. Meanwhile, Yankees catcher Jose Trevino’s struggles with baserunners continued to hurt the team, as Edman took advantage of his low caught-stealing rates. In 2024, Trevino allowed 57 stolen bases, ranking at the bottom of Statcast’s pop time and caught-stealing metrics. With these cracks in their defense, the Yankees will need to tighten up to avoid falling further behind in the series.

Pre-Game

Pitching Profiles
Clarke Schmidt: Entering Game 3, Schmidt’s focus is on his revamped cutter and sweeper, aiming to stifle the Dodgers’ left-heavy lineup. He’ll rely on outside corner placement to keep right-handers in check while challenging lefties like Freeman with his sinker.

Walker Buehler: The Dodgers’ ace brings a slightly adjusted arsenal tonight, as his velocity has waned since his 2022 Tommy John surgery. Buehler leans on his sweeper and slider now, particularly effective against left-handed hitters like Yankees’ star Juan Soto.

Ohtani’s health watch
Leading off tonight, Shohei Ohtani’s shoulder remains a hot topic. Medical experts suggest limited risk for further injury due to his designated hitter role. However, pain tolerance may impact his swing effectiveness, with the World Series stage leaving little room for hesitation at the plate.

Yankees vs. Dodgers — A classic rivalry reborn

This World Series marks the 12th showdown between these two franchises in the Fall Classic, a historic record for any pair in MLB. The Yankees and Dodgers, representing New York and Los Angeles—two of the largest media markets in the country—bring intense competition both on and off the field. Both teams entered the season with massive payrolls, ranking second and fifth in the league, respectively, underscoring their commitment to building championship-caliber rosters.

Leading the Yankees is Aaron Judge, the reigning MVP, while the Dodgers field Shohei Ohtani, another MVP contender and a dual-threat phenomenon who could make history this season. It’s the first World Series appearance for both players, adding an extra layer of excitement for fans.
