The New York Yankees’ 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Friday night came with potential injury setbacks and roster adjustments.
Catcher Jose Trevino exited the game in the ninth inning after sustaining a quad injury while sliding into home plate to score an insurance run. Manager Aaron Boone stated that Trevino’s condition would be reevaluated the following day. Trevino had been instrumental in the victory, contributing two doubles, including one that gave the Yankees an early lead.
If Trevino is unable to play, the Yankees may call up Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catchers Carlos Narvaez or Agustin Ramirez, both of whom are on the 40-man roster. Ben Rice, who has been covering for the injured Anthony Rizzo at first base, is also a natural catcher and could fill in as needed.
Yankees’ Davis down to IL with virus
In another development, the Yankees placed J.D. Davis on the 10-day injured list due to severe stomach flu. Boone mentioned that Davis had been unwell for several days and remained in Tampa, away from the team. The timing of Davis’ IL placement coincides with the upcoming All-Star break, giving him additional time to recover.
The game also saw tensions flare in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading to benches clearing and adding to an eventful night for the Yankees as they managed injury concerns and roster changes.
Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that while Davis is still under the weather, he is showing signs of recovery. In response, the team has called up Jorbit Vivas to fill the vacant roster spot.
Davis, who was recently acquired from the A’s, has had limited playing time since his last start on July 3 against a left-handed pitcher. His performance with the Yankees has been modest, recording just one hit in 13 at-bats and drawing two walks over five games.
Despite being informed upon joining the team that he could earn more playing time based on his performance, Davis has seen Ben Rice emerge as the primary first baseman. Rice has even ascended to the cleanup spot in the batting order.
If Davis’s condition improves, he will be eligible to return next Friday, when the second half of the season begins.
Recovering Rizzo in awe of Ben Rice
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo provided an update on his recovery from a right arm fracture sustained nearly four weeks ago. Speaking on the YES Network during the promotion of his foundation’s annual Swing For the Fences auction, Rizzo shared that his healing process is progressing well. He mentioned that while he can engage in some weight room activities, there are still limitations.
Rizzo expressed optimism about his recovery and eagerness to return to the field but acknowledged that he still experiences pain as the bone heals. He also praised Ben Rice, who has been filling in during his absence. Rizzo highlighted Rice’s impressive strike zone discipline and predicted future success for the young player. The veteran lauded Rice’s versatility in the batting order and his composure under pressure, noting these qualities make him a valuable asset to the team.
Rizzo’s anticipated return in August could pose a challenge for the Yankees’ lineup decisions, especially considering Rice’s immediate impact. Rizzo’s pre-injury struggles at the plate, combined with his leadership role, add to the complexity of the situation.
Rizzo’s comments underscored his recovery progress and his supportive stance toward Rice, while also hinting at the potential roster decisions the team will face upon his return.
