The New York Yankees clinched a playoff berth with a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park. The win solidified their postseason spot, while the Mariners, now 77-75, find themselves three games back in the American League Wild Card race. The Yankees join the Milwaukee Brewers as the first two teams to lock in a place in October baseball.

Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. was particularly enthusiastic during the team’s postgame celebration, predicting a World Series victory for New York in 2024.

“I love being a Yankee, these guys are making it great and we’re going to go win a World Series!,” he said after the win in Seattle.

Chisholm, who has playoff experience from his time with the Miami Marlins in 2020 and 2023, has quickly become an integral part of the Yankees lineup since being traded from Miami. In 37 games, he has delivered a .289/.344/.514 slash line, adding to an already potent offense.

Despite having not reached the World Series since 2009, the Yankees are considered top contenders this year. The powerful duo of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto has been key to their success, combining for 93 home runs and 239 RBIs. Chisholm’s contributions have further bolstered a lineup aiming for a deep postseason run.

Although the Yankees have locked up a playoff spot, they remain in a tight race with the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Guardians for the best record in the American League. Securing one of the top two seeds would grant them a valuable bye in the Wild Card Series. The AL East title may be within reach as early as Sunday, depending on their results and those of the Orioles.

Concerns, however, have surfaced about the Yankees‘ bullpen performance, particularly in late-game situations. Manager Aaron Boone’s strategic management of matchups will likely be pivotal in navigating these potential challenges as the team eyes a deep postseason run.

With a potent offense and adaptable strategy, the Yankees are expected to be a tough opponent in any short-series format this October.

Yankees euphoric after clinching playoff slot

Juan Soto, drenched in celebratory champagne, reflected on the camaraderie he’s found since joining the Yankees, a key factor in the team’s resurgence. His arrival sparked a renewed drive, culminating in a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park that secured New York’s postseason berth.

Soto joined in the festivities with enthusiasm, showering teammates and dancing to music in the clubhouse. He credited the team’s mutual trust and shared focus as vital ingredients for their success, hinting at greater achievements to come.

“We believe in each other,” the slugger said. “That’s what makes me think that we can go all the way, because we believe in each other. We don’t try to be the hero out there. We just try to do our job and try to win games.”

The playoff spot marks the Yankees’ return to October baseball after a one-year hiatus. But for the team, it’s just the first step toward a larger goal. The Yankees haven’t reached the World Series in 15 years, and this group is determined to change that.

Captain Aaron Judge acknowledged the significance of clinching a playoff spot but made clear that winning the division remains their primary goal. He emphasized the team’s resilience after missing the postseason last year and praised the unique bond this roster has built.

“We definitely know the job’s not finished. We want the division,” the Yankees captain told. “But to get an opportunity to punch our ticket back into the postseason after last year, missing out, it means a lot. We’ve got a special group here, and the boys are definitely excited.”

The Yankees, now 89-63, lead the American League with the best record and have stretched their advantage over the Orioles to five games in the AL East with 10 games left— their largest cushion of the season.

Manager Aaron Boone reflected on the season’s challenges, calling the playoff clinch a crucial first step. Using a dance metaphor, Boone suggested that the Yankees have joined the postseason “dance,” with plenty more exciting moments on the horizon.

“We’ve been through a lot already this year,” he explained. “We understand it’s just the first step, but it’s an important one. We’re in the dance.”

The groundwork for the Yankees’ successful season was laid well before Opening Day, as key players reported early to spring training in Tampa, eager to rebound from last year’s disappointment. The high expectations set by Juan Soto’s acquisition during the Winter Meetings were quickly validated by his dynamic partnership with Aaron Judge throughout the summer.

But it was the broader team effort that sealed their postseason berth. In Wednesday’s critical game, Nestor Cortes pitched six scoreless innings, and Anthony Rizzo delivered a crucial RBI double in the 10th inning. Rizzo’s heroics helped the Yankees secure a 2-1 victory over the Mariners, despite Clay Holmes blowing his 13th save of the season, locking in the franchise’s 59th postseason appearance.

Cortes expressed optimism about the team’s recent momentum, confident in their ability to continue performing well as they head into October. He suggested that even better things could be on the horizon for the team, “We’ve put a really good team together, and there’s more to come.”

This playoff berth guarantees at least a Wild Card spot as the Yankees remain in the hunt for the AL East crown, marking their seventh postseason appearance in the last eight years.

Catcher Austin Wells reflected on the excitement of returning to playoff baseball in the Bronx, praising the passion of Yankees fans. He anticipated a thrilling atmosphere at Yankee Stadium, calling the fans the best in the sport and the world.

“They’re the best fans in the game, the best fans in the world, so having that stadium back up for the playoffs is going to be really special,” the backstop said.

Juan Soto and Aaron Judge have etched their names in Yankees history, becoming just the third duo in franchise history to each hit 40 home runs in a season. This accomplishment places them alongside iconic pairs such as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, as well as Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the significance of their performance, calling it historically remarkable.

Soto, reflecting on the achievement, stressed the importance of teamwork. He highlighted the collective focus that has driven the Yankees throughout the season, emphasizing that individual success stems from the squad’s shared determination.

The Yankees’ resurgence this season can be linked to key factors, including Soto’s arrival via a December trade and the improved health of key players. Boone pointed out that unlike last year—when Aaron Judge’s injury at Dodger Stadium derailed the team’s chances—this year’s squad has demonstrated greater resilience in overcoming obstacles.

Players also drew motivation from missing the playoffs last season, which fueled their desire to return stronger. Boone candidly admitted that the 2023 Yankees were not a powerhouse, scraping by with 82 wins to keep their streak of winning seasons alive. However, he expressed confidence in this year’s team’s ability to achieve much more.
