The New York Yankees find themselves in a state of struggle this season, compounded by the absence of their star player Aaron Judge. A recent defeat at the hands of the Mets has only heightened concerns among fans.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox have also faced setbacks in their recent matches. With tensions running high, the upcoming showdown between these two legendary teams at Fenway Park promises to be captivating. In this article, we delve into the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, providing valuable insights into the highly anticipated game.

Yankees’ recent struggles

Over their last five matchups, the Yankees have endured three defeats, managing only two victories. Notably, their losses came against formidable adversaries such as the White Sox, Red Sox, and Mets. These setbacks have sparked worries among Yankees fans, who yearn to see their team regain its winning form. Keeping a close eye on the upcoming game is Anthony Volpe, a promising shortstop prospect who will make his maiden visit to Fenway Park as a Yankee. Volpe will be determined to maintain his composure, having shown signs of frustration in his previous encounter against the Red Sox in New York.

Reasons to fear the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have made notable strides in their starting pitching, impressively limiting opponents to two earned runs or fewer in 19 of their last 26 games. Right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck, with a commendable 2-2 record and a 2.41 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched against the Yankees, has consistently displayed his effectiveness.

In his recent outing against New York, Houck surrendered just two solo home runs over six innings. Moreover, the Red Sox triumphed in two out of three games in their previous series against the Yankees, showcasing their resilience by staging comebacks to salvage their series against the Rockies.

Nevertheless, the team’s right fielder, Alex Verdugo, has been in fine form, contributing three hits in four at-bats against the Rockies while driving in two runs. Additionally, the Red Sox enjoy a rest advantage over the Yankees, who have recently engaged in two extra-inning contests within their last three outings.

Reasons to back the Yankees

Despite the Red Sox’s signs of improvement, they have also endured multiple defeats in their last 12 games. It is unlikely that Tanner Houck will replicate his exceptional performance against the Yankees, given his overall season record of 3-6 with a 5.23 ERA.

In contrast, New York’s starter Domingo German has been more impressive, boasting a 4-3 record alongside a 3.49 ERA. German’s recent outing against the Red Sox showcased his skill, as he delivered a solid performance by pitching six innings, conceding just one run. Historically, German has proven to be a strong contender against Boston, tallying a 3-2 record with a 3.64 ERA in 13 games. German’s consistent performances and the Yankees’ recent success against the Red Sox provide a compelling argument for their victory.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are set to clash at Fenway Park on Friday, June 16, at 7:10 p.m. ET. In-market viewers can catch the game on YES and NESN, while out-of-market viewers can tune in to MLBN. A free trial of DirecTV Stream is available.

As the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox gear up for their highly anticipated encounter at Fenway Park, they possess distinctive strengths and weaknesses. Despite recent setbacks, the Yankees hold a solid track record against the Red Sox and boast the talents of pitcher Domingo German.

However, the Red Sox have made significant strides in their starting pitching and have showcased resilience in their recent matches. With the historic rivalry between these two teams, the upcoming game promises to be a spectacle that any avid baseball fan should not miss.
