New York – The New York Yankees’ pursuit of Mason Miller halted after the Oakland Athletics demanded Jasson Dominguez plus one elite pitching prospect for their All-Star closer, according to Bronx inside sources. This created an insurmountable gap in trade negotiations as the July 31 deadline looms.

The Athletics’ asking price represented one of the steepest demands for a relief pitcher in recent memory. Industry insiders suggest Oakland wanted Dominguez paired with one of the Yankees’ top young arms, likely including potentially rising stars Carlos Lagrange and Ben Hess.

Finally, the highly rated closer joined the Padres for no. 3 MLB prospect shortstop Leodalis De Vries and three rookie pitchers. The A’s also agreed to send JP Sears to San Diego as part of the deal.

Athletics’ sky-high asking price creates roadblock

The Yankees had shown interest in Miller since the 2024 trade deadline, but Oakland’s demands far exceed what New York appeared willing to offer. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the Athletics presented Miller as a cornerstone piece for their Las Vegas future and had set their price accordingly.

The proposed package of Dominguez plus one of two key pitching prospects would have forced the Yankees’ surrender significantly to fill just one position. While the team sees the Martian as one of their key future assets, Carlos Lagrange is now the Yankees’ second-best prospect. Ben Hess is prospect no. 7.

Industry experts suggest the Athletics’ demands stem from Miller’s exceptional value proposition. The 26-year-old closer is under team control through 2029, making just $765,000 in 2025 while delivering elite performance. His combination of youth, affordability, and dominance creates a rare asset that Oakland believes justifies maximum return.

The Yankees’ reluctance to meet these demands reflects their broader organizational philosophy. “The New York Yankees also have been involved in the talks, but are more focused on adding pitching than subtracting it,” Rosenthal noted, highlighting the fundamental tension in negotiations.

Miller’s dominance justifies Oakland’s position

Mason Miller’s performance metrics support the Athletics’ aggressive stance. Despite a 3.76 ERA and 20 saves in 2025, Miller maintains elite underlying numbers with a 1.01 WHIP and opponents hitting just .172 against him. His 101.1 mph average fastball velocity leads MLB, while his strikeout rate remains among baseball’s best.

The 2024 All-Star’s breakout season established him as arguably the game’s most dominant closer. Miller posted a 2.49 ERA with 28 saves while striking out 104 batters in 65 innings. His 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second among all MLB relievers, powered by a fastball-slider combination that generated 38% whiff rates.

Miller’s contract situation amplifies his trade value exponentially. Earning near-minimum wage through 2025, he won’t reach arbitration until 2026 and free agency until 2030. This represents potentially $60-80 million in surplus value for any acquiring team, making him one of baseball’s most cost-effective elite performers.

Miller’s 100+ mph fastball and strikeout ability make him an ideal face-of-the-franchise candidate, explaining their reluctance to trade him unless overwhelmed with prospects.

The Athletics played this unique position.

Yankees’ prospect evaluation creates dilemma

Jasson Dominguez remains a top Yankees despite recent struggles. The 22-year-old switch-hitter possesses rare five-tool potential. His left-handed swing shows more polish than his right side, but scouts believe both sides can produce above-average offensive output.

Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe pour ice on Jasson Dominguez to celebrate his walk-off home run that gave the Yankees 4-3 win over the Texas Rangers on May 21, 2025, in New York.

Dominguez’s major league experience adds complexity to his evaluation. He’s appeared in 115 MLB games since 2023, showing flashes of his immense talent while dealing with Tommy John surgery recovery. His 2025 role as the Yankees’ everyday left fielder makes him increasingly valuable to the organization’s immediate plans.

Carlos Lagrange, ranked among MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects nationally, represents another potential target in Athletics’ demands. The 19-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic signed for $2.5 million in 2023 and has shown impressive development in his early professional career. With a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and touches 98 mph, Lagrange possesses the type of premium arm talent Oakland seeks for their rebuild. Recently, he jumped to no. 2 Yankees prospect on MLB Pipeline list.

Ben Hess emerges as another potential target in Athletics’ demands. The Yankees’ 2024 first-round pick has impressed in his professional debut. At 6-foot-5 with a fastball approaching triple digits, Hess represents the type of upside arm Oakland covets for their rebuild.

Yankees’ bullpen needs create urgency

New York’s bullpen struggles in 2025 have created genuine desperation for late-inning help. The Yankees rank 20th in MLB with a 4.25 bullpen ERA, while their 13 blown saves highlight their inability to protect leads. Luke Weaver’s emergence as closer provides some stability, but the unit lacks depth and proven high-leverage options.

Miller would have immediately transformed the Yankees’ bullpen dynamics. His elite velocity and strikeout ability provide exactly what New York lacks, while his youth and contract status align with their competitive window. The combination of immediate impact and long-term value made Miller an ideal target despite the steep asking price.

Financial considerations favored the trade from the Yankees’ perspective. Currently $68.18 million over the luxury tax threshold, the team faces significant tax penalties that limit their free agent flexibility. Miller’s minimal salary impact would have provided elite talent without meaningfully affecting their tax calculation.

Strategic analysis reveals difficult choice

The Yankees faced a classic win-now versus future dilemma. At 33, Aaron Judge‘s prime window creates urgency around maximizing their current roster. The team’s 2024 World Series appearance and summer struggles in 2025 highlights the fine line between championship contention and mediocrity.

Trading Dominguez plus pitching prospects would have significantly depleted an already thin farm system. The Yankees rank 24th in organizational depth according to prospect evaluators, making any major subtraction particularly painful. Parting with three top prospects for one player, regardless of talent, creates substantial organizational risk.

However, Miller’s unique profile as a young, controlled, elite closer rarely becomes available. The Yankees haven’t had reliable late-inning help since Aroldis Chapman’s peak years, and their recent bullpen failures in crucial moments highlight the position’s importance. Miller could transform them from pretender to genuine World Series threat.

The Athletics’ demands reflected their strong negotiating position.

Market comparisons set precedent

Recent elite closer trades provide context for Oakland’s asking price. The Edwin Diaz trade in 2018 saw Seattle receive Jarred Kelenic (then a top-20 prospect) and Justin Dunn for a 24-year-old closer with four years of control. Both prospects were considered premium organizational assets.

The Josh Hader trade in 2022 brought Milwaukee two top-10 organizational prospects for a 28-year-old closer with 1.5 years of control. Even rental closers like Ryan Helsley commanded multiple prospects in recent deadline deals, establishing a high baseline for elite bullpen arms.

Miller’s profile exceeds both Diaz and Hader in key areas. His velocity (101+ mph) surpasses either pitcher’s peak, while his team control (through 2029) provides more value than either previous trade. The combination of elite stuff, youth, and maximum control justified Oakland’s aggressive stance.

Historical precedent suggests the Athletics’ demands aren’t unreasonable given Miller’s unique profile. However, the Yankees’ prospect depth limitations created practical obstacles to completing such a significant transaction. Their thin farm system lacks the organizational strength to absorb such a major depletion.

With Miller now gone, the Yankees need to finalize another top relief star before the trade deadline. With just few hours to go, it is up to Brian Cashman to make a decision that could define their 2025 season and future.
