According to a report by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, it appears that Franchy Cordero, who has been playing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was recently seen in the Yankees’ clubhouse. This suggests that he is likely to be called up to the major league team soon, taking the roster spot that will be vacated by Jake Bauers, who is set to go on the injured list due to a shoulder injury.
Cordero’s performance with the Yankees this season has been underwhelming, with a batting average of only .148, an on-base percentage of .179, and a slugging percentage of .389 over 56 plate appearances. These numbers indicate a lack of offensive production, raising concerns about his ability to significantly impact the team.
To cope with the unforeseen situation caused by injuries, the Yankees have relied on other players like Jake Bauers, Billy McKinney, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to fill the void. Unfortunately, Bauers, who has been making above-average offensive contributions this season, has succumbed to a shoulder injury that will keep him on the injured list until after the All-Star break. His absence is a setback for the team, as his offensive statistics, while not outstanding, have been decent.
With a batting average of .224, an on-base percentage of .312, seven home runs, and 19 RBIs, Bauers has managed to make notable contributions to the team’s offense. His 11.7% walk rate and .470 slugging percentage further highlight his ability to reach base and hit for power. Among the outfielders, Bauers’ weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 114 stands out, placing him second only to Aaron Judge regarding offensive performance.
In summary, Cordero’s potential recall from Triple-A suggests that the Yankees are seeking options to address their roster needs. However, his lackluster performance in the majors thus far raises questions about his ability to make a significant impact. The absence of Jake Bauers due to a shoulder injury is a setback for the team, as he has been providing above-average offensive production this season, with solid contributions in various statistical categories
