The New York Yankees are reportedly close to securing Mariners announcer Dave Sims as their new radio play-by-play voice, stepping in for the legendary John Sterling. According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, WFAN, the Yankees’ radio partner, is finalizing a deal to bring Sims back to New York.

This season was John Sterling’s last in the booth after an iconic 36-year run, which culminated in the Yankees’ playoff games before he officially retired following the World Series.

Sterling’s tenure, beginning in 1989, saw him narrate some of the Yankees’ most memorable moments, including five World Series championships and eight American League pennants. His distinct voice became synonymous with the team, capturing the excitement and drama of Yankees baseball for generations of fans. Though he initially stepped back during the season, Sterling returned for one final postseason stretch, giving him a chance to call the Yankees on baseball’s biggest stage one last time.

Dave Sims, a veteran broadcaster, brings a wealth of experience and a New York connection to the role. Known for his dynamic calls and vibrant personality, Sims has been the voice of the Seattle Mariners since 2007, where he became a fan favorite for his energetic style and memorable catchphrases. His signature “Hey Now!” call, notably heard when the Mariners ended their playoff drought in 2022, showcases his knack for amplifying pivotal moments.

This would mark Sims’ return to New York sports media. Before his time with the Mariners, he co-hosted a show with Ed Coleman on WFAN from 1989 to 1993 and worked as a news anchor at WBCS. Sims has also covered other sports, including a role as a radio host for the New York Knicks, proving his versatility and deep familiarity with New York’s sports scene. His years of experience in baseball, coupled with his ability to resonate with fans, make him an ideal candidate to follow in Sterling’s footsteps.

As the Yankees look ahead to the future, bringing in Sims adds an experienced yet refreshing voice to their broadcasts. His deep knowledge of the game and natural enthusiasm for calling pivotal plays promises to be a fitting continuation of the Yankees’ broadcast legacy. Fans can expect a smooth transition as Sims steps in, his vibrant calls bringing new energy while honoring the storied history left by Sterling.

With the deal expected to be finalized soon, Yankees fans can look forward to hearing Sims’ energetic calls in the upcoming season, ushering in a new era for the Yankees’ radio broadcasts.
