The Yankees have been preparing to the upcoming season that is about to start next month. However, in Mexico there is too much buzz in the fact that the Yankees is going to play in Mexico City.

As the excitement mounts for the upcoming exhibition games between the New York Yankees and the Diablos Rojos in Mexico City, preparations behind the scenes are in full swing to ensure everything meets the Yankees’ stringent requirements. This meticulous attention to detail promises an unforgettable experience for both players and fans alike.

The Story behind Mexico hosting a Yankees game

As reported by ESPN Deportes, it was a groundbreaking move as the Diablos Rojos and the New York Yankees secretly negotiated for six months to bring the Yankees to play in Mexico City. Spearheaded by figures like Omar Minaya and Alfredo Harp Helu, the plan evolved from a jest to a tangible reality.

Negotiations began in August and were finalized by November, culminating in an agreement to host the Yankees at the Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium in 2024. With key support from Brian Cashman and other Yankees executives, the event became a milestone in Mexican baseball history.

Why is everyone so excited about this game in Mexico?

The significance of the occasion wasn’t lost on the Diablos Rojos, who saw it as a dream come true. Amidst meticulous preparations and logistical coordination, both teams ensured the success of the historic games, marking the Yankees’ return to Mexico after more than fifty years.

Throughout the Hispanic countries in Latin America, such as the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc., there is immense enthusiasm for baseball. Perhaps Mexico is the luckiest to host the most popular baseball team. Consequently, the Yankees have been making headlines across every sports page of ESPN in Latin America.

For the Diablos Rojos, hosting the Yankees is not just a matter of arranging a baseball game; it’s a feat that involves meeting over 50 specific requirements laid out by the Bronx Bombers. These demands range from the presence of specialized equipment like whirlpool tubs and ultrasound machines in the visiting team’s locker room to precise specifications for the playing field itself.

Jorge del Valle, Manager Deportivo of the Diablos, reminisces to the ESPN Mexico about the extensive checklist that had to be meticulously ticked off to ensure compliance with the MLB collective agreement. From the thickness of mattresses to the temperature of the water, no detail is too small when it comes to meeting the Yankees’ standards.

Francisco Ramos, the director of the Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium, expressed similar sentiments, stating that Mexico had done everything necessary to meet the standards required to host the team in Latin America. The Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium, the venue for the much-anticipated games, has undergone significant upgrades to accommodate the Yankees’ requirements. Ramos highlights the installation of additional cameras for broadcasting and the implementation of a fiber optic plan to enhance connectivity—a testament to the stadium’s commitment to providing a world-class experience.

“The field project meets the specifications of the local league and the United States league,” acknowledges Francisco Ramos. “People from the Yankees came; we’ve already had protocol, travel, and security visits. They will continue to come, we expect visits all the time, it’s part of their job, both in sports and in accommodation,” adds the executive.

The experience in past years with the MLB World Tour Mexico City Series helped the Diablos meet all the requirements on time.

“The fact of having Major League experience gives you a lot of insight because what a game like that demands is what the Yankees demand. I’ve said it before, the first time is very difficult, and the second time is less difficult. In the games from a year ago, we were nervous, we didn’t know which way to turn. Today, the experience, the team, gives us peace of mind,” explains Othon Diaz.

As fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of their beloved Yankees, the atmosphere in Mexico City is electric. The decision to host the games at Felipe Ángeles Airport adds an extra layer of excitement, with government security personnel working tirelessly to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the event.

For die-hard Yankees fans, the opportunity to see their favorite team in action on foreign soil is a dream come true. Despite the absence of legendary players like Mickey Mantle, the allure of the Yankees’ historic uniform and legacy of excellence continues to captivate fans around the world.

As the countdown to game day begins, both teams are gearing up for an unforgettable showdown on Mexican soil. Whether you’re a Yankees fanatic or a casual baseball enthusiast, the upcoming games promise to be a spectacle not to be missed. So, grab your jerseys, rally caps, and get ready to cheer on the Yanks as they take on the Diablos Rojos in Mexico City.
