New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole has yet to win a Cy Young award, but a recent MLB.com poll of 49 experts suggests he is getting closer after two months of the season.
Despite his failure to win the award in the past, MLB experts have recognized Gerrit Cole as a formidable candidate for the Cy Young this time. The poll employed a 5-3-3-2-1 scale, assigning higher scores more points. It’s important to note that the voters for the Cy Young Award will adopt a similar system after the season, increasing his chances of winning the prestigious accolade.
Gerrit Cole getting closer every year
It is essential to acknowledge that Gerrit Cole has consistently been in the running for this award. In the previous year, he finished ninth in Cy Young voting in the American League. He has finished among the top ten in voting on six occasions, coming closest in 2019 with the Houston Astros, where he secured second place after a stellar 20-5 season with an AL-leading 2.50 ERA.
Gerrit Cole’s statistics this season further solidify his case, with a 7-0 record in 13 starts and a 2.82 ERA. He has recorded 84 strikeouts while only walking 28 batters. Recently, he surpassed the milestone of 2,000 career strikeouts in MLB.
Who’s leading the pack?
Despite his strong performance, Gerrit Cole is not currently leading the poll. The top position is held by Tampa Bay starter Shane McClanahan, who received 29 first-place votes. Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi garnered six first-place votes. Houston starter Framber Valdez secured fourth place, while Minnesota’s Sonny Gray came in fifth. Notably, all the players in the top five received at least one first-place vote.
