NEW YORK — On his 34th birthday, George Springer marked the occasion with his 57th career leadoff home run, while Bo Bichette added a two-run homer as the Toronto Blue Jays secured a 7-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

Toronto started the game with a one-game advantage over Seattle and Texas in the race for the second AL wild card, while the Yankees were six games behind and needed to surpass both Seattle and Texas to secure the last AL wild card spot.

Yusei Kikuchi (10-6) was taken out of the game after facing one batter in the sixth inning due to a left upper trap muscle cramp, following an examination by athletic trainer Jose Ministral. Kikuchi had a solid performance, allowing just one run and four hits in five-plus innings, securing his first win since August 2.

George Springer celebrated his 34th birthday by hitting his 57th career leadoff home run, and Bo Bichette added a two-run homer. This home run marked Springer’s eighth season with at least 20 homers. These offensive contributions came against Clarke Schmidt (9-9), and Springer’s home run was followed by Bichette’s first since August 20.

Alejandro Kirk extended the lead with a two-run home run in the ninth inning, and Kevin Kiermaier scored due to a fielding error by rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Bichette reached base three times during the game and advanced to third when third baseman Oswald Peraza made a throwing error on a grounder hit by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Following Peraza’s fourth error of the game, Bichette’s presence on the bases led to Toronto taking a 2-1 lead after Cavan Biggio’s single dropped in front of center fielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Kikuchi left the game after walking DJ LeMahieu to begin the sixth inning. Yimi Garcia came in and induced Giancarlo Stanton to hit into a double play, ending the threat.

Trevor Richards and Jordan Hicks each pitched a perfect inning before Alejandro Kirk hit his first home run since July 29.

Gleyber Torres provided the Yankees’ only run with an RBI double in the first inning. The Yankees struggled offensively, scoring just one run or fewer for the 27th time this season.

Clarke Schmidt had a challenging outing, allowing four runs and four hits in five innings on the mound for the Yankees.
