The New York Yankees have sent pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez to their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes Barre. Gonzalez had been put on waivers by the Yankees earlier in the week after he had been designated for assignment, but he was released without being claimed.
The Yankee pitcher has two options. Either he can turn down the job and become a free agent right away, or he can wait until the season is over and then become a free agent then. Any outrighted player with three-plus years of service has this right.
Pitcher Gonzalez, who is now 30 years old, was signed by the Yankees in August. However, he was assigned to the RailRiders, where he made five starts and compiled a 3.63 earned run average in 22 1/3 innings pitched.
Gonzalez was called up by the team over the weekend on October 2, and he was given the opportunity to start Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, despite the fact that there was a chance of rain at Yankee Stadium and that New York had little to play for. He was designated for assignment on October 4.
In his first start for the Yankees, the right-hander pitched well, allowing only one run over 4 1/3 innings. In the loss to the Orioles by a score of 3-1, the pitcher had three walks and three strikeouts.
On Monday, the Yankees exercised their discretion to release the pitcher in order to make room on the roster for Miguel Castro.
Gonzalez’s previous teams include the Texas Rangers, the Colorado Rockies, the Minnesota Twins, and the Milwaukee Brewers. The pitcher got his MLB debut chance with the Texas Rangers on May 30, 2015. Prior to joining the Yankees, Gonzalez got a waiver from the Brewers. Over the course of six Major League Baseball seasons, he has made a total of 68 appearances and has a record of 9-24 with a 5.66 ERA.
Do you think the pitcher can resurrect his career and make an MLB return?
