In one of his first major league starts of the season, Luis Gil provided a glimmer of hope for the Yankees’ pitching rotation with a brilliant outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
Luis Gil’s incredible night vs. Diamondbacks
The 25-year-old right-hander silenced the Diamondbacks’ bats for 4.2 innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out six batters.
After his outstanding outing, Luis Gil was greeted by teammate Marcus Stroman, who was first out of the dugout donning a throwback Yankees shirt to congratulate the rising star.
An improbable journey
Luis Gil delivered an impressive performance, pitching 4.2 innings with just 1 hit and 1 earned run, while striking out 6 batters. His stellar showing provided an unexpected boost for New York amid Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury. With a fastball reaching 99 mph and his changeup and slider keeping Arizona hitters off-balance throughout the game, Gil proved to be a valuable asset for the team.
Only weeks ago, the idea of Luis Gil making it to the starting rotation seemed unlikely. Still recovering from Tommy John surgery, he wasn’t considered a top contender during spring training. However, Gil exceeded expectations, boasting a 2.87 ERA and striking out an impressive 23 batters in 15 2/3 innings of Grapefruit League action.
“The way Luis has thrown the ball, he’s certainly earned that (rotation spot) with how he’s performed,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone in an interview with the NY POST on March 26. “Excited about what he can be as a starting pitcher.”
While questions remain about New York’s overall pitching depth, Gil’s dominant debut provides optimism that he’s not just filling a void, but potentially blossoming into a cornerstone of the rotation.
Yankees fans can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they have a young rising arm ready to unleash his arsenal and propel the team forward as they chase a playoff spot.

Well, if guys like Schmidt & Gil can deliver in the rotation, maybe, just maybe the Yankees don’t have to give bad contracts to guys like Rodón, and be OK giving shots to other guys in future years, let it be a Chase Hampton, a Brock Selvidge, or even a Henry Lalane.
