New York Yankees 4-5 Tampa Bay Rays

This Thursday night, New York Yankees‘ struggles persisted as they fell to the Tampa Bay Rays in the deciding game of their series.

With Nestor Cortes pitching against Shane Baz, the Yankees hoped to secure their first series win in nearly a month. Nevertheless, familiar issues such as missed scoring opportunities and a short outing from their starter led to a 5-4 defeat, marking another July series loss for the Yankees.

How it happened

The Yankees started the game with promise but without DJ LeMahieu, who was out after a throat incident the day before.

Alex Verdugo singled, and Juan Soto doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. However, Aaron Judge‘s flyout didn’t advance the runners, and strikeouts from Ben Rice and Gleyber Torres ended the inning without a score. The Rays quickly took advantage, with Randy Arozarena hitting a two-run homer off Cortes just two batters into his start.

The Yankees managed to tie the game at two with solo home runs from Austin Wells and Juan Soto in the second and third innings. But Cortes continued to struggle, giving up three more runs in the third inning. Brandon Lowe’s RBI single, followed by an Amed Rosario double and a Jose Siri sacrifice fly, put the Rays ahead for good.

Despite a strong performance from the bullpen—Michael Tonkin, Jake Cousins, and Caleb Ferguson all pitched scoreless innings—the Yankees’ offense couldn’t deliver in crucial moments. Their only hit with runners in scoring position came in the top of the ninth when Ben Rice’s RBI single made it a one-run game. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Nestor Cortes lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. His road struggles continued, with a 5.63 ERA over nine starts away from Yankee Stadium this season.

Missed opportunities defined the Yankees’ game. In the first inning, both Verdugo and Soto got hits but were left stranded on base. Another chance slipped away in the eighth inning when the bases were loaded, resulting in the ejection of pitching coach Matt Blake for arguing balls and strikes after pinch-hitter Jose Trevino struck out looking.

On a positive note, the bullpen performed exceptionally well, shutting down the Rays’ offense and keeping the Yankees in the game. Michael Tonkin immediately induced a double play with the bases loaded and struck out the side in the following inning, proving to be a standout in the bullpen. Jake Cousins also struck out the side, showcasing his impressive form since rejoining the team amidst recent roster changes. Caleb Ferguson delivered a scoreless inning as well, but these efforts ultimately couldn’t turn the tide for the Bronx Bombers.

Holding a 56-39 record, the Yankees now head to Baltimore to face the first-place Orioles, hoping to make up ground in the AL East standings. The Orioles have also been struggling, losing three straight games. Friday’s pitching matchup will feature Gerrit Cole against Cade Povich, a repeat of their June 19 showdown where the Yankees lost 7-6 despite a solid outing from Cole.

With the All-Star break approaching, the Yankees are in desperate need of a turnaround. The upcoming series against Baltimore presents a crucial opportunity to gain momentum and improve their standing in the division. As the Yankees look to end their losing streak and secure a series win, the pressure is on to deliver in high-stakes situations and provide better support for their pitching staff.
