The New York Yankees generated $279.2 million in ticket sales for the 2023 season, according to municipal bond disclosures this month. This represents a drop from 2022’s total of $345 million, though some of last year’s figure likely included refunds for unplayed playoff games.
However, this came amid rising criticism of ticket prices, which will be more costly in 2024. Mike Francesa took the owners head-on for doing business at the cost of fans, especially at a time when the priority should be to ensure the Yankees return to winning ways.
Yankees garnered $279 million
Despite missing the playoffs with an 82-80 record this past season, the 2023 ticket tally still exceeded 2016, the Yankees’ last non-postseason year when sales totaled $231 million.
As one of baseball’s premier draws, the Yankees attracted over 3.269 million fans to Yankee Stadium for their 81 home games in 2022. That per-game average of over 40,000 trailed only the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB attendance.
The lowest Yankee Stadium ticket sales came in 2020 when the pandemic prevented fans. 2021 saw restrictions limit sales to under 2 million. Based on available data, their best season in the current ballpark was 2009, when they last won the World Series and generated over $400 million in ticket revenue.
The Yankees disclosed annual ticket sales figures due to the revenue pledged to finance construction bonds for Yankee Stadium. The reported totals do not include concessions, merchandise, media rights or other streams.
While down from last season, the 2023 ticket sales show the enduring popularity of Yankees baseball despite rare back-to-back playoff misses. Fans continue flocking to the Bronx in droves.
