In the realm of MLB rumors for 2023, the Yankees have reignited their rivalry with the Dodgers while keeping a keen eye on the coveted talent of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, scouted by the Giants.

The year 2023 dealt another disheartening blow to the New York Yankees and their loyal fan base. Despite their fail to qualify for the playoff, the Yankees fell short, missing the postseason for the first time since 2016. What exacerbated the situation was the persistent sense of irrelevance surrounding the team throughout the season.

In their quest to reclaim their status as formidable contenders, the Yankees have undertaken critical measures to ensure they do not repeat last season’s fate. As the regular season concluded, amidst speculation from USA Today’s baseball expert, Bob Nightengale, regarding the Yankees’ rivals, the New York Mets, the interest in the Japanese right-handed sensation, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, has found a new contender in the San Francisco Giants. The Giants have deployed their scouts to closely monitor the 25-year-old talent.

Why are the Giants pursuing Yamamoto?

The Giants are in dire need of pitching reinforcements. In the 2023 season, they lacked a reliable starting pitcher with an ERA under 3.00. While Logan Webb displayed moments of brilliance, and Alex Wood showed flashes of potential, the Giants require consistent performance on the mound to compete with their long-time rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yamamoto’s performance in 2023 was nothing short of remarkable. He boasted an extraordinary ERA of 1.14, along with a remarkable WHIP of 0.860, surrendering only 22 earned runs and a mere two home runs throughout the season. Acquiring Yamamoto would not only strengthen a rotation in dire need of a genuine ace but also prevent him from bolstering the Dodgers, who are equally hungry for pitching talent.

Despite winning the NL West and clinching 100 victories, the Dodgers’ pitching staff was exposed in the playoffs. Arizona subjected them to a brutal offensive onslaught, scoring 19 runs across just three games against the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Bobby Miller, and Lance Lynn.

It’s undeniable that the Giants need to bolster their offensive lineup, especially when facing the mighty Dodgers, led by Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. However, in the world of baseball, one universal truth persists: solid pitching can stifle even the most potent of bats. By securing Yamamoto, the Giants have an opportunity to transform their dismal 6-7 record against the Dodgers into a more favorable outcome, enabling them to vie for supremacy in a division that also features an up-and-coming Diamondbacks squad fresh from their impressive NLCS appearance the previous season.

While alternatives, including the highly-touted Cy Young favorite Blake Snell, are available, none quite match the youthful promise embodied by Yamamoto. Welcoming him into the fold and providing him with the opportunity to fine-tune his skills early, as his compatriot Kodai Senga did with the Mets in 2023, could yield remarkable results. The end result might very well be a Giants team that transcends its recent status as an afterthought, emerging once again as a potent force within the realm of Major League Baseball.

Why do the Yankees need Yamamoto?

Who is Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and what’s the source of Yankees’ Brian Cashman’s keen interest? This past September, during the Yankees’ Old Timers Day celebration honoring the 1998 championship team, the most thunderous applause was reserved for their iconic former captain and star shortstop, Derek Jeter. Notably absent from the festivities was the Yankees’ long-serving general manager, Brian Cashman. It’s surprising, considering that the 1998 season marked Cashman’s inaugural year as GM, a position he’s retained ever since.

Curiously, Cashman and a contingent from the Yankees’ front office were thousands of miles away in Japan. Their mission? To witness the dazzling performance of Japanese right-handed pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was in the process of securing his second career no-hitter.

For context, Yamamoto plies his trade with the Orix Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball’s Pacific League. If the name Orix sounds familiar, it’s where Red Sox rookie Masataka Yoshida previously showcased his talents before joining Boston. The legendary Ichiro Suzuki, a former Yankee, is also a product of Orix.

At a mere 25 years of age, Yamamoto boasts an impressive track record, with two no-hitters and a remarkable 1.74 ERA over seven years. He averages 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) and issues just two walks per nine (BB/9). According to a scout referenced by Joel Sherman of the Post, Yamamoto wields a formidable arsenal, including five pitches, a mid-to-high 90s fastball, a wicked splitter, and a curve. Fangraphs adds that he also possesses a reliable cutter.

Yamamoto’s profile might invoke memories of a former Japanese Yankee known for his annual brilliance and mastery of the splitter. However, securing Yamamoto’s talents during the offseason is no guarantee, as Orix must post him, necessitating a $20 million fee for the privilege of negotiating with him
