Even if you don’t have Amazon Prime, you can still watch the Yankees tonight at the local bar thanks to DirecTV.
As the first of the Yankees’ 20 games this season airs on Prime Video, DirecTV for Business is about to announce a partnership with Prime Video that will bring these Yankees games to bars and restaurants in New York State, Connecticut, and parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where the Yankees play.
“For decades, DirecTV has given sports fans all over the country access to their favorite teams how and where they want to watch them,” according to Rob Thun, head of content at DirecTV. “We look forward to bringing those fans even more Yankees games to watch at their favorite local bars, restaurants, and other commercial establishments.”
After live streaming has taken over and sports fast becoming a key area where fans look for content accessibility, it’s hard for sports bar owners to keep track of all the different rules about what they can and can’t stream, as well as the different devices and services they need to use to show games.
DirecTV has made some things easier for them at times. It already had a deal with Amazon to show Thursday Night Football, and this year it added the MLB games that are now behind a $7-a-month paywall to Apple TV+. More than 300,000 businesses all over the country have signed up for DirecTV’s business plans.
Other businesses have also tried to fill the void. The NFL and RedBird Capital Partners started EverPass Media last week. The company will sell licenses to bars and restaurants for the league’s out-of-market package and may look to add more content.
After purchasing a share in YES Network in 2019, Amazon began airing exclusive Yankees games last year. Meanwhile, YES began its own direct-to-consumer services just hours before Opening Day.
