The Yankees have officially announced Clarke Schmidt as the starting pitcher for Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Kansas City Royals, set for Wednesday night. Manager Aaron Boone faced a choice between Schmidt and the young Luis Gil for the pivotal first road game of the series but decided to go with the more experienced Schmidt.

“I just feel like Clarke is the right guy for that game,” Boone said, explaining his decision. “I have a lot of confidence in what both bring to the table, and if we move on, Luis will be back in the rotation. But for now, Clarke is ready to go for Game 3.”

Luis Gil, who will not be joining the rotation for this series, will now be available out of the bullpen, possibly starting as soon as Monday’s Game 2 at Yankee Stadium. The decision adds a layer of depth to the Yankees’ bullpen, which could be key as the team looks to take control of the series.

Schmidt seeks postseason redemption

When Clarke Schmidt takes the mound in Kansas City, he’ll be seeking redemption. The right-hander has struggled in limited postseason action, with an 11.57 ERA in just three career playoff appearances. However, despite missing significant time this season due to injury, Schmidt performed well when healthy, posting a 2.85 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP over 85.1 innings. His regular-season performance gives the Yankees hope he can deliver when it matters most.

The Royals have yet to announce their starting pitcher for Game 3, but it is widely expected that former New York Mets right-hander Seth Lugo will take the ball. Lugo had an impressive season, tying for the lead in baseball with 16 wins, and would pose a tough challenge for the Yankees’ lineup.

Yankees rely on depth and versatility

In addition to the pitching decision, Aaron Boone also revealed that Jon Berti, acquired from the Miami Marlins just before Opening Day, will make his first professional start at first base in Game 2. Berti hit .273 in limited action this year, playing in 25 games across multiple positions, including second base, third base, and left field. His versatility will be on display as the Yankees try to find the right mix to advance in the postseason.

As the series shifts to Kansas City, all eyes will be on Schmidt to see if he can rise to the occasion and lead the Yankees to victory in this pivotal game.
