In the unfolding saga of a potential trade involving star outfielder Juan Soto, the spotlight has shifted significantly toward the New York Yankees. The San Diego Padres, motivated by the need to alleviate salary constraints after a challenging 2023 season, have identified Soto as a prime trade candidate, especially given his impending contract expiration.

Yankees’ winter wish

Recent developments, as reported by MLB insider Andy Martino of SNY, indicate a notable advancement in talks between the Padres and the Yankees. The two teams have moved beyond preliminary discussions to the point of actively exchanging names of potential players involved in the trade. While an agreement is not imminent, the progress in negotiations signifies a crucial step forward.

The Padres’ initial asking price for Soto was understandably steep, reflective of his standing as one of the league’s premier talents. Despite the current gap in reaching a consensus, the Yankees, driven by their desire to make a substantial impact this winter, find themselves in the forefront of discussions to acquire Soto, a move that could significantly reshape their roster dynamics.

In pursuit of Soto, the Padres are eyeing key assets within the Yankees’ system. Although specific player names have not been disclosed, there’s speculation that the Padres are interested in acquiring top prospects and rookies such as Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe. Additionally, they appear open to exploring young major league pitchers in the mold of Michael King and Clarke Schmidt, among other valuable assets.

As negotiations progress, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Padres are positioned to secure a substantial return for their star outfielder, even if it doesn’t precisely mirror their initial investment in acquiring him. The imminent winter meetings, scheduled for the upcoming week, stand as a pivotal moment where significant transactions are anticipated to unfold.

The looming prospect of a Soto trade to the Yankees, though not yet finalized, injects a heightened level of intrigue into the offseason narrative. If the deal materializes, it has the potential to be a seismic event, aligning with the Yankees’ aspirations to make a significant splash in the player market. With fans and analysts eagerly awaiting further developments, the ongoing exchange of player names underscores the possibility of a resolution on the horizon, one that could redefine the complexion of both the Padres and Yankees rosters in the forthcoming season.

  1. Getting rid of King is a mistake since he can be added to the starting rotation. I thought there were better options available last year than Volpe. A Dominguez, Schmidt trade for Soto wouldn’t be bad. But, still need to sign Bellinger and Yamamoto. Should have signed Seager last year but, oh well. Looks like Ausmus is being groomed for Boones job which shouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings.

  2. don’t want to give up too much, Boros is his agent so he’s gonna go to free agency. Possibly have him for one year so don’t want to decimate the system for a rental
