The Yankees nearly traded Gleyber Torres for Pablo Lopez before pulling the plug. None should regret it. Lopez had a “dead arm” until Tuesday, when he pitched six scoreless innings against the A’s.
Nestor Cortes’ groin injury raises questions about why the Yankees traded Jordan Montgomery for Harrison Bader. Brian Cashman said on The Post podcast “The Show” that their defense is weakest in center field. Unsaid: They didn’t think Montgomery was playoff-ready.
Aaron Boone has done an excellent job of mixing and matching, but this cannot continue indefinitely. With so many candidates to close and set up, whether he finds the reliable ones may be the deciding factor in their season.

Martin Maldonado catches most games, which is odd. Maldonado is Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez’s personal catcher. That doesn’t explain the rest.
Even though Pedro Martinez told Mike Puma of The Post that he couldn’t see Jacob deGrom leaving the Mets, I could see Texas making a move for him.
In September, it is anticipated that Michael Conforto will have a team on which he will serve as the designated hitter.
The Mets, especially Jay Horwits, did a great job on Saturday of getting 65 old-timers to come to their day. Lenny Dykstra said on Twitter that he would explain why he wasn’t invited. I would have thought that was obvious.
